FOUR OAKS -- Kyle Sasser emerged the hero ... again.

The Eastern Wayne kicker split the uprights from 20 yards out with 50 seconds remaining, and lifted the Warriors to a 31-30 victory over South Johnston in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams Friday evening.

Earlier this season, Sasser drilled the game-winning field goal in an overtime victory over county rival Goldsboro High.

The Warriors (5-2 overall) won a league opener for the first time since 2006.

"I have all the confidence in the world that he will make the kick if we get in that position," said Eastern Wayne head coach Bubba Williams. "We had a bad snap on an earlier attempt, but that last one went off without a hitch and he drilled it."

Sasser provided the late-game fireworks, but it was do-it-all back Lamar Best who provided most of the Warriors' offense. The senior rushed for 258 yards on 29 carries and scored three touchdowns in the victory. For good measure, the multi-talented senior caught one pass for two yards and attempted two passes from the quarterback spot.

"Lamar is having a great year, and every week he finds a way to come out and make all kinds of plays," said Williams. "Our offensive line and our fullback did a nice job of blocking up front and Lamar made the most of his opportunities."

Avner Clark threw for 128 yards. Tykel Thompson hauled in three receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown.

Eastern Wayne entertains Triton in another key conference matchup Friday.
