Cross country

Britt leads pack

* Nick Britt ran a season-best time of 17 minutes to capture first-place honors in the Carolina 1-A Conference cross country meet at Goldsboro High School on Wednesday.

Princeton's Quinn Dougherty and Matt Edwards ran second and third respectively. The Dawgs finished first in the team standings.

Tyler Lane paced Goldsboro with a time of 19:53 seconds.

On the girls' side of the ledger, Hattie Dougherty continued her dominance with a victory in 21:13. Goldsboro's Mikayla Huf (22:37) ran second and Rosewood's Chloe Lamb (23:12) finished third.

Rosewood won the girls' team competition.

The five Carolina 1-A Conference schools will run again on Oct. 13 at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park.

Girls' tennis

C.B. Aycock 6, East Duplin 3

* PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock rallied for four wins in singles play en route to a 6-3 win over East Duplin on Wednesday night.

Harlie Howard, Brittany Parrish, Misti Edwards and Tiffany Godwin each claimed their respective singles match for the Golden Falcons.

The tandems of Caroline Bone-Godwin and Howard-Edwards each prevailed in doubles play.

C.B. Aycock (12-7 overall, 9-1 conf.) will host Southern Wayne today.

Boys' soccer

Ayden-Grifton 2, Rosewood 1

* AYDEN -- A free kick in overtime led to the demise of Rosewood at Carolina 1-A Conference rival Ayden-Grifton on Wednesday night.

Antonio Henriquez scored the Eagles' lone goal off an assist by Jonathan Franks in the ninth minute.

Rosewood (4-5-0 overall, 1-2-0 CC) travels to Princeton on Tuesday.

Girls' golf

CBA cruises

* WILSON -- Tara Simmons carded a nine-hole round of 38 to lead Charles B. Aycock to victory over Beddingfield and Southern Wayne on Wednesday afternoon.

Jesse Stewart fired a 49 and Madison Aycock finished with a 58 to round out the Golden Falcons' team score of 145.

Southern Wayne finished with a 187 team total.

Both C.B. Aycock and Southern Wayne will be back in action on Monday in the final Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match of the season at Southern Wayne Country Club.

Volleyball

Princeton 3, Spring Creek 0

* PRINCETON -- Princeton wasted no time dispatching Carolina 1-A Conference rival Spring Creek 25-10, 25-22, 25-16 on Wednesday night.

Savanna Massengill led the Dawgs with six kills. Linda Smith dished out 18 assists and Kaitlyn Peedin recorded five digs.

Kelsey Rogers led the Gators with 11 kills. Diana Carreno tallied six assists and Lucy Avila recorded three digs.

Spring Creek (2-10 overall, 1-7 CC) travels to Rosewood today. Princeton (11-6, 6-1) is the guest of Goldsboro today.

Wayne Country Day 3, Epiphany 0

* Middle hitter Hannah Pearson pounded out 11 kills in the Chargers' 25-22, 25-16, 25-16 victory over their Coastal Plains Independent 1-A rival.

Pearson added four assists. Kim Martell logged eight kills, seven digs and two service aces. Edie Hooks (four assists), Natalie Ecker (two kills), Brooke Neal (three digs) and Jessica Zhou (10 digs) contributed to the three-set win.

Sterling Coggins handed out six assists and collected two kills.

Wayne Country Day (15-4 overall, 5-1 CPIC) travel to defending league champion Oakwood today.

Princeton 3, North Duplin 1

* CALYPSO -- Junior middle hitter Tearra Ammons cranked out a match-high 16 kills in the Rebels' four-set loss to Carolina 1-A Conference rival Princeton on Tuesday.

Ammons also had four blocks. Scarlett Martin added two service aces, three kills and two blocks. Alonna Pate (three kills), Skylar McCarty (four kills) and Angelica Favela (three aces) contributed to the match.

Hannah Brock dished out 11 assists.

North Duplin (7-8 overall, 4-3 CC) travels to Ayden-Grifton today.

JV sports

* Vollwyball: Epiphany d. Wayne Country Day 25-14, 25-18 -- Taylor Sledge handed out three assists for the Chargers. Stephanie Schappell served two aces, while Savannah Strickland recorded two kills. Gracie Gurley added one ace and one kill. The Chargers dropped to 4-10 overall.

* Volleyball: Princeton d. North Duplin 25-22, 25-16 -- Jessica Jones led the Rebels' attack with five kills. Lyndsie Harrell (three aces), Ansley Hill (five assists), Kristen Martin (two aces) and Noliva Ramos (two aces) also contributed offensively.

* Volleyball: Princeton d. Spring Creek 25-11, 25-14 -- Amber Hill led the Dawgs with 10 kills. Mary Jones finished with four digs in the win. Lauren Woodard tallied 22 assists.

* Mount Olive 39, Grantham 12 -- Quinton Carlton and James Leonard each rushed for two touchdowns for the Hurricanes. Atjarick Freeman provided one touchdown. Defensive leaders were Hunter Barwick, Zach Price and Esteban Leon. Mount Olive improved to 4-0 overall this season.

10-Under

* Mount Olive 40, Grantham 13 -- Mo Brooks rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns, while Darion Leach scored once for the Hurricanes. Brooks returned an interception for a touchdown. T.J. Pearsall (6 tackles) recorded three stops behind the line of scrimmage. Terrion Leach collected five tackles. The Hurricanes are 3-1 overall.

8-Under

* Mount Olive 26, Grantham 6 -- Jamal Leach rambled for two touchdowns, while teammates Jalen Thompson and Darion Thompson each supplied a TD in the Hurricanes' win. Quadrez Lassiter paced the defense with five solo tackles, four assists and four fumble hits. Jerome Moore contributed four tackles, while Zion Thompson recovered a fumble. The Hurricanes improved to 3-0 overall.
