BURGAW -- Unbeaten and state-ranked Pender raced out to an early lead, and handed James Kenan a 49-34 loss in Tri-County 1-A Conference play Monday evening.
The Tigers suffered their fourth consecutive loss.
Pender (5-0 overall, 2-0 TCC) broke the scoreless tie three minutes into the opening quarter on Shaq Hooper's 4-yard touchdown run. Hooper rushed for six touchdowns in the contest, which was rescheduled from Friday due to heavy rainfall from tropical storm Nicole.
James Kenan (2-4, 0-2) answered with its passing game.
Parker Jones threw two first-quarter touchdowns and wound up with career highs of 329 yards and three TDs. Jones completed passes to five different receivers, including James Owens Jr., who hauled in a career-best 11 passes for 212 yards and two scores.
Jones led the Tigers' rushing attack with 40 yards. Kenan finished with 81 total yards on the ground.
Dontrill Hyman logged a whopping 21 tackles on defense, while Donald Johnson provided 12 stops. Jon Webster added 11 tackles.
James Kenan begins a three-game homestand Friday against league foe Heide Trask. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Bill Taylor Field.
