Volleyball

Lakewood 3, North Duplin 0

* Junior middle hitter Tearra Ammons logged two service aces, two kills and two blocks in the Rebels' season-opening loss. Angelica Favela added two aces, three kills and four digs. Alonna Pate (two kills) and Hannah Brock (five assists, three aces) also contributed offensively. The Rebels (0-1 overall) travel to Hobbton today.

Greene Central 3, Eastern Wayne 1

* Peri Dail led the Rams with seven kills and one block. Kaitlyn Napier added three kills and three blocks. Greene Central improved to 1-1 on the year. Eastern Wayne (0-2 overall) travels to Goldsboro today.

Soccer

Corinth-Holders 5, Goldsboro 2

* Goldsboro (0-2-0 overall) got a pair of first-half goals, but couldn't keep the momentum against Corinth-Holders. Bryan Johnson delivered a goal and an assist for the Cougars. Damon Pate added one goal in the defeat.

"I thought we played 20 great minutes of soccer," said Goldsboro head coach Tyler Gatlin. "We still have some things we have to work on, but I think we can still be a very good team."

Goldsboro travels to Beddingfield on Monday.

Golf

Walnut Creek LGA

* Hiromi Sueki emerged the play-of-the-day winner during weekly tournament action at Walnut Creek Country Club. Faye Franklin claimed low gross, while Joyce Reynolds and Betty Holloway shared low net. Linda Cannon claimed low putts for the field.

* The tandem of Novella Zambelli-Linda Watson placed fifth overall in Tournament-Flight 2 action during the 33rd Carolinas Women's Four-Ball Championship. The duo carded a two-day round of 82-93--175 on the Callawassie (S.C.) Island Club links.

JV sports

* Volleyball: Lakewood d. North Duplin 25-23, 25-22 -- Jessica Jones led the Rebels with five aces, one kill and one block. Lyndsie Harrell supplied two aces and two kills. Mia Owens contributed two aces and three digs.
