PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock recovered from a disappointing season-opening loss to Princeton on Tuesday and rallied to beat county foe Goldsboro 25-16, 25-16, 25-16 on Wednesday night.

The veteran Golden Falcon squad led throughout the opening set as Madison Mercer and Connor Davis established themselves along the front line. Mercer tallied a kill on the first two points of the match. Davis added a pair of kills in the set.

"I think we came out today and were more focused, and played a smarter game," said C.B. Aycock head coach Davis Harris. "Our serving has been excellent through the first two games and that set the tone for us again tonight."

Goldsboro started strong in the second set.

Brandy Johnson tallied two kills and a block as the Cougars grabbed a 14-11 lead. After the teams traded a pair of points, the Golden Falcons got their rhythm back. Freshman Bailee Hughes walked to the service line and the home team reeled off 10 straight points to take a 22-15 lead.

Hughes posted four aces during the match-turning stretch.

"We knew coming in that this match would be a tough test," said Goldsboro head coach T.J. Lancaster. "I think our girls did a nice job of battling when we were down and I am really proud of the effort I saw tonight."

C.B. Aycock took care of business in the third set thanks to eight consecutive points that led to a 17-9 advantage. The Cougars fought back behind a six-point scoring run. Johnson led the visitors back into contention before a pair of unforced errors completed the Golden Falcon victory.

Mercer finished with seven kills and two blocks. Davis added five kills. Hughes finished with three kills and five aces.

Johnson led the Cougars with seven kills and one block. Anastazja Harris added four kills and one block.

"Coach Lancaster has done a really nice job with the Goldsboro team and they have come a long way in three years," said Harris. "It's good to get an early win and we beat a quality team."

Goldsboro (1-1 overall) entertains Eastern Wayne today. C.B. Aycock (1-1) will play host to Princeton on Tuesday.
