MOUNT OLIVE -- Benny Benton has come home.
The former Mount Olive College sports information director has been named the school's new assistant SID. Benton begins his duties Aug. 9.
Prior to his first stint at MOC, Benton spent eight years in the sports department at the Florence (S.C.) Morning News. He started his career as a staff writer, served time as the assistant sports editor and also worked as a senior sports writer.
Benton arrived at MOC in 1997, two seasons after the Trojans moved to the Division II ranks. He provided publicity and statistics for the athletic teams, and handled an early version of what is now the MOC athletics website.
After his four-year tenure at Mount Olive, Benton worked as the communications and information specialist at N.C. State. He also handled editor duties for the school's 7,200-circulation faculty/staff newspaper.
Benton served as the press conference coordinator and media relations assistant at the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Division II College World Series in Cary.
"I've known Benny for a good while and I'm thrilled to have someone with his talent and experience helping out in the sports information office," said David Shulimson. "The athletics department is glad to have Benny back in the Mount Olive College family."
The MOC sports season starts Sept. 2 when the men's soccer team entertains Florida Southern and the women's soccer team travels to in-state foe UNC Pembroke. The Trojan women's volleyball team visits former conference foe Anderson on Sept. 3 and cross country starts Sept. 3.
