GREENSBORO -- Josh Morehead's fumble return ignited the West and teammate Banks Jenkins provided the offense in a 22-7 victory over the East in the annual N.C. Coaches Association All-Star football game Wednesday evening.
Morehead earned defensive MVP accolades with an interception, fumble recovery and a tackle. He helped the West snap a three-game skid against the East before nearly 8,000 fans in sweltering temperatures at Jamieson Stadium.
Jenkins seized the offensive MVP award, hauling in four catches for 86 yards.
The West struck first when Josh Dula returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter. Dula, a 5-foot-11 defensive back from Lenoir Hibriten, took the punt and circled back toward the West sideline, where he picked up a vicious block from teammate Steve Williams, who leveled the East's Josh Barbour near midfield.
Dula beat two more East defenders before reaching the end zone.
Kicker Patrick Smith of Hickory pushed the lead to 9-0 with a 41-yard field goal on the last play of the first half.
West extended its lead to 15-0 with 9:01 left on a 4-yard run by Kurt Odom of Robbinsville. The West tacked on one last score on a 4-yard touchdown run by Kevin Jeter of Gastonia Forestview.
Adrian Scott helped the East avoid the shutout with a 10-yard touchdown run with 3:35 to play.
