Danny Merritt was among six coaches who picked up coach-of-the-year awards for spring sports in Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I and II play.
Although Merritt's team finished winless at Dillard, the long-time baseball enthusiast was named the Division I coach for his efforts to help rebuild the program, which is the main feeder school for Goldsboro High.
Doyle Whitfield, a N.C. American Legion Baseball Hall of Famer, was named the Division II coach-of-the-year. Whitfield guided Grantham to a 14-0 season and its second consecutive WCMSAC crown.
In softball, Norwayne's Dan Millard and Eastern Wayne's Jennifer Edgerton shared the Division I coach-of-the-year honors. Millard has led Norwayne to 158 consecutive victories and 12 straight championships.
On the Division II scene, Grantham's Andy Wingate picked up the top coaching honor.
Stacey Klincicht was named coach-of-the-year in girls' soccer. There are no separate divisions since just six teams in the county have programs.
Babe Ruth
Goldsboro swept
PIKEVILLE -- Pikeville swept a doubleheader, 7-6 and 8-6, from Goldsboro on the Babe Ruth baseball scene Wednesday evening.
In game one, Goldsboro (3-3 overall) surrendered seven first-inning runs.
A.J. Lane paced Goldsboro's offense with two hits, including a double. Teammates Asunji Maddox, Sam Ferrell, Ronald Woody, Trey Hammonds and Sherard Harvin had one hit apiece.
In the nightcap, M.J. Morgan emerged Goldsboro's offensive leader with two hits. Hammonds provided a triple.
Golf
Goldsboro Municipal GC
Craig Sutton recorded his second career ace at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday.
Sutton collected his hole-in-one on the par-3, No. 12 hole. He hit a 7-iron from the white tees. Playing partners Coggie Williams, George Williams, Phil Talerico and Zeb Musgrave witnessed the feat.
Walnut Creek LGA
Charlotte Campbell and Gaye Bryant shared play-of-the-day honors during weekly action on the Walnut Creek Country Club links.
Hiromi Sueki won low gross. Linda Cannon seized low net, while Beverly Ives claimed low putts for the field.
Lane Tree LGA
Linda Watson claimed game-of-the-week honors on the Lane Tree Golf Club links.
Linda Hilburn and Mary Ann Sutton won low net and low putts, respectively.
