Watching three basketball coaches come and go through the doors of Goldsboro High School in four years taught Rasean Brewington a thing or two about a good fit.
The 6-foot-3 senior forward considered N.C. Wesleyan, Winston-Salem State, Lenoir Community College, Shaw, St. Augustine's, Hampton and Charleston Southern before ultimately choosing to continue his career at Guilford Technical Community College.
Guilford finished with a 28-4 record in 2010 including a 17-1 mark in conference play, while capturing the Junior College Region X regular season championship. The Titans ended the regular season ranked No. 4 in the nation.
"They've been recruiting me since the state championship game, and I went up there on a visit and I liked it a whole lot," said Brewington. "I felt like it was the best fit for me."
Brewington plans to attend GTCC for a year before transferring to Winston-Salem State.
"I'm going to use this extra year to get in the weight room and get ready to play in Division II and the CIAA," said Brewington.
The soft-spoken Brewington averaged a team-high 18.8 points per game during his final year in a Cougars uniform. He helped guide Goldsboro to a 23-8 record, Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season and tournament titles and a berth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state title game.
Brewington scored in double figures 27 times last season, averaged 6.9 rebounds a game and was a 72-percent free throw shooter. The Cougars rattled off 11 straight wins before falling to Monroe in the state finals.
"I think what made us so successful this year was Rasean's basketball IQ," said first-year Goldsboro head coach Patrick Reynell. "I felt like we had an assistant coach out on the floor. I think that's what is going to prepare him most for the next level."
Brewington learned the importance of independence while playing for four different coaches during his high school career. Randy Jordan, Tod Morgan and Chris Cherry all left during Brewington's time at Goldsboro.
Reynell brought stability to the program and renewed emphasis to the defensive end of the floor.
While adapting to a different leadership style each season, Brewington also grew to understand the heightened expectations that come with playing for a tradition-rich program like Goldsboro.
"It helped me to be on my own and taught me how to work on my own," said Brewington. "I just take it one step at a time. I have to get my mind right and focus on the task at hand, and just basically be prepared to win."
