KINSTON -- Greene Central wrapped up the number one seed in the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference with a 7-5 win over Kinston at historic Grainger Stadium on Monday evening.

John Nethercutt lasted six innings to get the win on the pitcher's mound. Zach Chase earned the save with one inning of perfect relief.

Wes Sowers paced the Rams at the plate with two hits and three RBI. Trent Murray also finished with two hits.

Greene Central will open the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state playoffs on Friday in Snow Hill. The opening-round oppoent has not been determined.

Tennis

Warriors ousted

CAMERON -- Eastern Wayne got individual victories from Chaz Fitzpatrick and Russell Turner during singles play, but it was not enough to take down Union Pines in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A dual-team playoffs.

The Vikings stole a 5-4 victory.

The Warriors nearly pulled out the match late in singles play when Joe DiCesare and Mike Ames each took their opponents into third set tie-breaks before eventually being defeated.

"Joe DiCesare almost pulled it out and Mike Ames played an amazing high school match," Eastern Wayne head coach Craig Hassell said. "I was really proud of the effort our guys put forth today."

The tandems of Fitzpatrick-Mike Barnette and Turner-Aaron Dunmire each won their respective match during doubles play.

Golf

Eagles fifth

SOUTHERN PINES -- Wayne Christian stands in fifth place in the team competition after opening-round play of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A golf championships at Mid-Pines Golf Club.

Davis Taylor carded the Eagles' best round with a 78. Nathan Taylor (96), Bryson Tart (102) and Lauren Larison (116) completed the Wayne Christian total of 362.

Trinity of Durham leads the competition with a 307 total.

Play concludes today.

Gators sit 10th

SOUTHERN PINES -- Spring Creek tallied a four-man total of 366 on the opening day of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A tournament at Longleaf Country Club on Monday.

The Gators reside in 10 place, four shots behind Williamston and five strokes ahead of Southwest Onslow. Bishop McGuinness leads the competition with a 311 total.

The teams will take to the course for the final round today.

Saints off pace

PINEHURST--Southern Wayne recorded a four-man total of 369 on the opening day of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A championship at Foxfire Country Club on Monday.

Southern Wayne is currently in 12th place, 35 strokes behind West Carteret. Defending state champion Hickory leads the event with a 304 total.

Final round play concludes today.
