Rosewood offense wakes up in fifth vs. Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Better late than never.

For five innings, Rosewood head coach Tracie Meadows begged her team to be patient at the plate and aggressive on the bases.

The Eagles finally responded with a five-run, fifth-inning outburst and thwarted a late Spring Creek rally in a 6-3, Carolina 1-A Conference softball victory Thursday evening.

"It's the same things that I say every game and every practice," said Meadows. "We have five starters that are freshmen and it seems to take a little longer to sink in, but we are starting to get it."

Tied at 1-1, the Gators put together a fourth-inning rally.

Elizabeth Edwards reached on a two-base error and Jordan Cook singled. Amy Parker ripped an RBI base hit and Jessica Prunest added an RBI single that put Spring Creek ahead 3-1.

Rosewood came alive in the top of the sixth.

Charlotte Kornegay walked, Kelsey Kornegay singled and Laura Vinson belted a base hit. Meagan Tyndall reached on an error that tied the game and Scout Anderson followed suit on a second Gator miscue. Beth Dill ripped an RBI single and Amanda Beckert drove in a run with a productive groundout.

By the time the dust settled, Rosewood held a 6-3 advantage.

"It's the routine plays that we needed to make that we didn't tonight," said Spring Creek head coach David McSwain. "It was so close we could taste it."

The Gators attempted a seventh-inning comeback.

Alex Benton reached on an error and two batters later, Kaitlyn Casey did the same. Facing the potential tying run at the plate, the Eagles' Beckert beared down in the pitcher's circle and got out of the jam.

Beckert scattered six hits and tallied one strikeout in the win.

Rosewood (4-9 overall, 4-3 CC) entertains North Duplin next Tuesday, while Spring Creek (1-11, 1-6) plays host to Goldsboro.
