Wayne Christian defeated state-ranked Trinity of Durham 6-5 on Thursday and advanced to today's finals of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament.

Senior Travis Thomas paced the offense with a 4-for-4 performance at the place. Thomas tripled in the bottom of the seventh inning and later scored the winning run.

Stephen Gallagher and Chase Darden each added two hits. Gregory Johnson and Dylan Smith had a hit each.

Gallagher pitched three innings of relief to earn the win on the mound.

The Eagles (14-8 overall) face Community Christian today in Fayetteville for the tournament championship.

Rams win

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central defeated Eastern Plains 2-A Conference opponent Farmville Central 6-1 on Thursday night.

Trent Murray (two RBI) and Will Bynum both collected two hits for the Rams. Wes Sowers belted a two-run home run in the first inning.

Deric Grant pitched a complete game, surrendering one earned run on two hits with seven strikeouts and one walk to claim the pitching victory.

Greene Central (13-6 overall, 9-2 EPC) visits Southern Wayne on Monday.

Track

GHS takes 2nd

PRINCETON -- Goldsboro's boys finished second to host Princeton in the Carolina 1-A Conference track and field championships on Thursday afternoon.

Andre Montgomery claimed the shot put for the Cougars. Bryan Johnson earned first-place finishes in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Goldsboro's 3,200-meter relay team also finished first.

The Cougars' Mikayla Huf crossed the line in first place in the 3,200 girls' race.

Falcons prevail

LaGRANGE -- Charles B. Aycock tallied 80 team points and claimed an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tri-meet at North Lenoir on Thursday.

The Hawks compiled 47 points and Southern Wanye had 27.

Tyrice Gilbert earned first-place finishes in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles for the Golden Falcons. Drew Daniels was first in the discus and Khaili Owens prevailed in the 400 meters. Cade Ivey was victorious in the 800 meters.

Aycock also finished first in the 400-, 800- and 3,200-meter relays.

The ECC championships are Tuesday at South Johnston.

Warriors victorious

FOUR OAKS -- Eastern Wayne's girls prevailed in 10 different events and won an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tri-meet at South Johnston on Thursday.

The Warriors tallied 81 team points to finish ahead of the host Trojans' 49. Triton was third with 46 points.

Tiarra McIntyre earned first-place finishes for the Warriors in the 100-meter dash and 300-meter hurdles. Brianna Coleman was first in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash.

Other first-place finishers for Eastern Wayne were Tamiya Dortch (long jump), Gabrielle Haire (3,200) and Tia Jones (400). The Warriors also prevailed in the 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter relays.

Tennis

Chargers take one

WILMINGTON -- Wayne Country Day triumphed in five singles matches and turned back Cape Fear Academy 7-1 on Thursday afternoon.

Michael Knutson, Thomas Elmore, Jack Langston, Ravi Chitilla and Alex Nolan each picked up a singles point for the Chargers.

Elmore-Knutson and Langston-Douglas Williams each emerged victorious in doubles play.

The Chargers return to action May 8 in the season-ending, Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference tournament at Greenfield.

Middle schools

* Baseball: Norwayne 12, Eastern Wayne 6 -- Noah West and Jacob Naughton each tallied three hits including a home run apiece for Norwayne. Collin Hinnant also provided three hits. Logan Brown earned the win on the mound. Norwayne concluded the season 14-0 and won its fourth consecutive Division I Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference championship.

* Baseball: Greenwood 36, Dillard 35 --Hunter McKoy and Debbie Otano each had three hits for Greenwood. Mitchell Vanditorg added two hits. J'Jaun Brown, Toric Best and Shamak Faison all contributed three hits for Dillard. Chandler Evans provided two hits. The game lasted four hours and nine minutes.
