WILSON -- Wayne Country Day scored the winning run in the top of the 10th inning to down Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference baseball nemesis Greenfield 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Knights out-hit the Chargers 14-5.
Cameron Ford earned the mound win with a complete-game performance. The right-hander permitted three earned runs and struck out eight batters.
"Cameron again stepped up and played like a senior leader," said Wayne Country Day head coach Michael Taylor. "His hard-nosed play got us this win."
Hil Tanner led the Chargers at the plate with two hits and an RBI. Tyson Pearson, Tee Uzzell and Ford tallied one hit apiece.
Wayne Country Day (13-7 overall, 6-1 CPIC) claimed a share of the regular-season championship. A victory against Oakwood on Friday assures the Chargers of the automatic bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.
Eagles dominate
Wayne Christian got off to a hot start and never looked back in a 20-0 defeat of Northwood Temple in the opening round of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament on Wednesday.
Chase Darden pitched a five-inning complete game for the Eagles. Darden only allowed two hits.
Chandler Harrell led the Eagles at the plate with a home run and six RBI. Ryan Cooke and Darden each added three hits for the victors.
Wayne Christian (12-8 overall) travels to Fayetteville for second-round tournament action today.
Soccer
Warriors roll
LaGRANGE -- Eastern Wayne held Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival North Lenoir to just one shot en route to a 3-0 victory on Wednesday night in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Warriors, who allowed one goal in ECC play this spring, put the finishing touches on just their third conference championship in program history. Eastern Wayne won league titles in 2002 and 2006.
Lily Herlihy scored two goals in the win. Amber Miller added the Warriors' third goal. Lindsey Underwood tallied two assists and Jenna Martin finished with one assist.
Danielle Daniel earned the win in goal for Eastern Wayne by stopping the only shot she faced and preserving her ninth shutout of the season.
Eastern Wayne outshot North Lenoir 28-1 on the night.
The top-seeded Warriors (10-4 overall, 8-0 ECC) drew an opening-round bye in the ECC tournament, and could face one of three teams in the semifinals next week.
RHS gets shutout
Rosewood broke open a scoreless tie in the second half with a four-goal outburst en route to a 4-0 win over Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek on Wednesday night.
Logan Bill and Gabrille Cornman each tallied two goals in the victory. Kelsey Wolfe recorded two assists. Chelsea Sasser and Deema Atra each added one assist.
Taylor Johnson earned the shutout in goal for Rosewood and finished with four saves.
The Eagles (8-4 overall, 3-0 CC) travel to Goldsboro on Monday.
Golf
Cougars advance
Goldsboro fired a four-man team total of 418 which was good enough for a third-place finish in the final Carolina 1-A Conference golf match of the league slate.
The Cougars made up 40 strokes in the season standings and edged Princeton for the final berth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regional on Monday at River Landing in Wallace.
It will be the first time in program history that Goldsboro has advanced to the regional meet.
