Eagles extend advantage

DUDLEY -- After three matches in Carolina 1-A Conference play, the Rosewood High golf team held an 11-stroke advantage over its nearest competitor.

Following Thursday's showdown at Southern Wayne Country Club, the Eagles were a little more comfortable in their advantage.

Rosewood finished with a four-player total of 341, which was 11 shots better than Spring Creek (352), and increased the difference between the squads to 22 shots on the season.

The Eagles' Will Coughron fired an 18-hole round of 79 to claim medalist honors.

"I don't think that I played that well today but I ended up with a score that was all right," said Coughron. "There is a big difference between playing well and scoring well. Today I scored well."

A 40-foot putt on the final green proved to be the biggest shot of the day for Coughron, who saved a par and ended his round with a broad smile.

"That is one of those putts that your not really thinking about making," he said. "I just rolled it in the right direction and it happened to fall."

Wesley Hobleman (85), Blake Weaver (88) and Andrew Henn (89) rounded out the Eagles' team total. Jordan Edwards paced Spring Creek with a round of 84. Kenneth Freeman added an 88, while Andrew Webber and Paul Sullivan each recorded a round of 90.

Goldsboro finished third in the team standings at 424.

"These guys are really coming along but we still need to work on our short game as a team," said Goldsboro head coach Al Sutherland. "A couple years ago third place seemed far away, but now we are right in it."

Obediah Speight led the Cougars with a 98. Ricky Castillo fired a 105, Matt Davis added a 108 and Kris Hutchins finished with a 113.

Princeton tallied a 433 total behind an 87 from Ryne Woodard. Charles Rhodes added a 107, Cody Price finished with a 115 and Trent Poplan added a 124.

North Duplin rounded out the team scores with a 472. Phillip Holland fired a 110, while Adam Kornegay added a 111. Josh Lane finished with a 125 and Caleb Day carded a 126.

Ayden-Grifton did not have enough players to record a team score.

The six Carolina 1-A Conference teams will return to action Wednesday at Falling Creek CC in Kinston.
