PIKEVILLE -- Coming off a loss less than 24 hours earlier, Charles B. Aycock rebounded for a 2-0 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Triton on Wednesday.
The Golden Falcons dominated from the opening minute as they controlled the ball and peppered the Hawks' goal with shots. For the first 20 minutes, the visitors' defense rose to the challenge.
C.B. Aycock finally found the mark after it was awarded a corner kick. Jessica Price sent the ball toward the net and watched as the would-be pass deflected off the Triton keeper and across the goal line.
"We started a little slow but playing back-to-back days is always tough," said Golden Falcons' assistant coach Adam Livengood. "I thought our midfield played more aggressive today and we were able to control the game by keeping the ball in our end."
The Hawks only advanced the ball into the Golden Falcons' 18-yard box three times and tallied just one shot in the game. Despite the opponent's offensive futility, C.B. Aycock could not scratch an insurance goal on the tight Triton defense.
Until the 79th minute.
Tara Simmons collected a loose ball in the center of the box and got off a quick shot before the defense could react.
"We had a few good-looking shots go wide or cross the face of the goal," said Livengood. "We played well enough to win and that's what counts. A win is a win."
C.B. Aycock fired 12 shots to just one for Triton. The Golden Falcons were awarded six corner kicks while the Hawks finished with none.
The Golden Falcons (7-4-1 overall) improved to 3-1-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play. They host Rocky Mount today for their third game in a three-day span.
