GREENVILLE -- UNC-Wilmington scored six runs in the final two innings and claimed a 15-13, non-conference win over No. 23-ranked East Carolina on Wednesday evening.
The Seahawks snapped the Pirates' eight-game win streak.
Trailing 12-9 after seven innings, UNCW (14-10 overall) pushed across five runs on three hits to take a 15-12 lead in the eighth inning. The Seahawks stopped a pair of Pirate rallies in the eighth with bases loaded and ninth with the tying run on second and no outs. ECU (17-9) plated a ninth-inning run when Austin Homan scored on a passed ball.
Pirates closer Seth Simmons (1-1) blew the save opportunity and took the loss.
ECU launches its Conference USA season at home Friday against Tulane. Newly-hired men's basketball coach Jeff Lebo will throw out the pitch. Game time is 7 p.m.
