Five Wayne County players have earned spots on the 2009-10 N.C. Basketball Coaches Association All-District 3 team in boys' and girls' play this season.
Goldsboro senior RaSean Brewington was named a second-team selection, while Charles B. Aycock's Issac Ryals and Brandon Winford each picked up third-team honors.
Spring Creek senior Melanique DeVeaux and Eastern Wayne senior Tiarra McIntyre drew third-team recognition on the girls' side.
Brewington, a 6-foot-2 forward, helped guide Goldsboro to a runner-up finish in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A state championship game. It was the Cougars' first appearance in a state final since 2003 and just the fourth overall in the program's illustrious history.
"The Carolina Conference does not acknowledge a player of the year and that was one of the considerations in (all-district) voting," said Goldsboro coach Patrick Reynell. "He was recognized by the other coaches in district three as a versatile inside-outside threat. This region was full of talent at the 3-A level, and RaSean proved his worth among the large schools.
"He is deserving of such an accolade."
Ryals and Winford led the Golden Falcons to a record-setting season.
The duo helped Aycock claim its first regular-season conference championship and tournament title since the mid-1990s when Fate Ferrell roamed the sidelines as head coach. The Golden Falcons reached the sectional finals for the third time in program history and lost to eventual state champion Rocky Mount.
DeVeaux surpassed the 1,000-point plateau in her career and earned all-Carolina Conference honors. The Gators made their second consecutive appearance in the NCHSAA 1-A playoffs.
McIntyre emerged one of the area's top scorers and grabbed all-Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference honors. The Warriors advanced to the NCHSAA playoffs.
