White shines in varisty debut for Rebels

CALYPSO -- Larry White made the most of his high school pitching debut as North Duplin held off a late rally and defeated Hobbton 6-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

A 14-year old freshman, White tossed five sterling innings and allowed just one hit before being removed due to a high pitch count.

"We didn't really know what Larry had coming in," said North Duplin head coach Joey Keefe. "We've seen him throw in the bullpen, but you never really know how a kid is going to react until the lights are on. He did a great job."

The Rebels jumped on top in the first inning when James Kornegay belted a double that plated his brother Marcus. Will Lanier blasted a solo home run to lead off the second inning and the Rebels added a third run on an RBI single from Brian Chase.

Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, North Duplin employed a hit parade that included a single by Lanier, a two-run single by Shane Deaver and a single by Chase.

Down 6-1 with just three outs to go, the Wildcats rallied.

Adam Raynor belted an RBI single and was followed by a two-run shot off the bat of Alan Britt. With the game suddenly hanging in the balance, Deaver settled down and retired the final batter on a fly ball to center field.

"Getting this win is a big confidence builder for our guys and for me, too," said Keefe. "I have never been 2-0 before as a head coach, and even though it's early I think our guys are adjusting and hopefully we can keep the momentum going."

Deaver led the Rebels at the plate with two hits and two RBI. Chase also tallied two hits to go with one RBI.

North Duplin travels to county rival James Kenan on Thursday.
