DURHAM -- Wayne Christian employed a stingy 2-3 zone defense and never let off the accelerator in a 45-28 victory over Cresset Christian in the opening round of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference girls' basketball tournament on Friday night.
Hanna Kaler led the Eagles with a double-double -- 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jennifer Price added seven points and 14 boards. Kaitlyn Kosuda also tallied double-digit rebounds with 10 to go along with her five points.
Wayne Christian advances to the semifinal round of the tournament next Friday at Trinity of Durham.
WCDS prevails
WILSON -- Wayne Country Day saved its best for last in a 42-30 victory over Coastal Plains Independent Conference girls' basketball rival Greenfield on Friday night.
Both teams started at an incredibly slow pace and were tied 6-6 after one quarter. With just seven players dressed on each side, neither squad could afford significant foul trouble.
The teams traded baskets throughout the second period, but a last-second bucket by
Mack Thompson stole the lead and the momentum for the Chargers.
Wayne Country Day dominated the second half behind more solid interior work by Thompson and a pair of timely baskets by Catherine Ford, who later left the game with an injured elbow during the fourth quarter.
Thompson paced the Chargers' offense with 13 points and seven rebounds. Ford added 10 points. Kim Martell scored eight points and grabbed nine boards.
Wayne Country Day will enjoy a week off before playing in the CPIC tournament at Greenfield on Friday night.

Eagles ousted
FAYETTEVILLE -- Wayne Christian could not get the timely baskets it needed in a 52-45 loss at Cape Fear Christian on Friday night.
Luke Howell matched his season high with 20 points to lead the Eagles. Anthony Mulligan added eight rebounds. Tyler Mooring scored eight points.
The loss eliminated the Eagles (4-15 overall) from the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament.
