HOLLY RIDGE -- Cameron Lane posted two crucial individual victories and Rosewood advanced to the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A eastern dual-team wrestling championship on Tuesday evening.

Lane's third-period pin of 215-pounder Humberto Mendoza secured the Eagles' opening-round, come-from-behind 37-33 triumph over Pamlico County. Against perennial power Dixon, Lane stuck heavyweight Avery Arnold with 29 seconds remaining and secured a 42-35 win.

The Eagles (30-7 overall) face West Montgomery for the eastern regional title on Saturday. The western finalists will be determined today.

"We dodged a major bullet tonight against Pamlico County," said Rosewood coach Bill Edmundson. "We came out flat and it showed. Thankfully, we had stellar performances by Chris Lane, Jacob Roberts, Taylor McGill and Cameron to help seal the victory."

Chris Lane pinned Harrison Lee in 41 seconds during their 103-pound bout. Roberts (160 pounds) and McGill (189) also pinned their respective opponents to set the table for Cameron Lane.

Edmundson and his coaching staff tweaked the starting lineup against Dixon, and it paid huge dividends at 171 and 189 pounds. Roberts earned a nail-biting 6-4 decision over the Dogs' James Marker, and McGill followed with a third-period fall over Jason Sapp.

The two wins gave Rosewood a 36-29 advantage.

The Bulldogs, the Coastal Plains champions, won the 215-pound match and pulled within 36-35 in the overall score. Lane followed with his third-period fall to send Rosewood to the eastern final.

"This was a true team effort from top to bottom and our guys deserve a lot of credit for pulling out these two wins against quality competition," said Edmundson. "Pamlico and Dixon were well prepared and very physical."
