GREENVILLE -- Reco McCarter posted a double-double and Wayne Country Day clinched a share of the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference regular-season boys' basketball championship on Tuesday evening.

McCarter, who signed with Virginia Commonwealth, pumped in 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the Chargers' 64-39 victory at Oakwood. N.C. Central signee Tim Hobbs contributed 15 points and seven boards.

McCarter and Rashid Williams dished out five assists apiece.

The Chargers (20-8 overall, 5-0 CPIC) conclude regular-season play Friday at long-time nemesis Greenfield School. Tip-off is approximately 8 p.m.

CBA pounds Triton

ERWIN -- Isaac Ryals led five players in double figures and Charles B. Aycock routed Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Triton 86-50 on Tuesday night.

Ryals finished with a game-high 23 points. Terrance Drakeford chipped in 14 points and Brandon Winford and Dontay Gills both had 12. Cameron Rowe provided 11 points.

The Golden Falcons (20-2 overall, 8-1 ECC) close out their regular season on Thursday by hosting Southern Wayne with first place on the line in the ECC.

Bulldogs stumble

AYDEN -- Princeton's losing streak reached four games with a 52-50 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference rival Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday night.

Monte Atkinson paced the Chargers with 15 points.

David Gurganus scored 13 points and handed out eight assists for the Bulldogs. Benton Myers contributed 12 points and Matt Williamson had eight points and nine rebounds.

Princeton (10-11, 4-5 CC) plays host to Rosewood on Friday night.

Eagles prevail

Rosewood turned back Carolina 1-A Conference opponent North Duplin 58-43 on Tuesday evening.

Antonio Henriques scored 24 points for the Eagles. Cody Harris chipped in 13 points and Jacquez Raynor had 11.

Marcus Kornegay led the Rebels with 11 points and Alan Schilling added 10.

Rosewood (9-13 overall, 4-5 CC) visits Princeton on Friday while North Duplin (1-19, 1-8) entertains Spring Creek.

Girls basketball

Cougars dominate

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Zeara McDuffie poured in a game-high 23 points and Goldsboro dominated the paint in a 56-31 blowout of Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek on Tuesday night.

The Cougars controlled the glass and capitalized on their height advantage all night. Center Akeyanna Whitlor finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Alexus Myles contributed eight points and nine rebounds.

"We saw that we had an advantage on the inside so we needed to find ways to get to the interior," said Goldsboro head coach Brandy Smith. "We take advantage of the height on the nights when we are playing smaller teams. It was good to dominate on the glass."

The Cougars held the Gators to just one double-digit scorer in Kaitlyn Casey, who finished with 12 points. Goldsboro outscored Spring Creek 44-24 during the final three quarters and forced 15 first-half turnovers.

"That's been our bread and butter since day one," said Smith. "It's all about defense. That's how we win games. We have half-court offense, but our best shot at getting great offense is getting easy transition buckets. When we play good defense we get the steals and we get the easy transition opportunities."

The Cougars (18-4 overall, 9-0 CC) entertain Ayden-Grifton on Friday and can clinch the regular-season championship outright with a victory. The Gators (7-12, 5-4) travel to archrival Ayden-Grifton.

Warriors hold on

DUDLEY -- Eastern Wayne jumped out to an early lead and held off a late charge from Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Southern Wayne in a 46-42 victory on Tuesday night.

The Warriors opened up a five-point lead in the first quarter when Danielle Daniel buried two consecutive baskets. Eastern Wayne led until late in the third quarter when the Saints battled back to tie the game at 35-35.

The Warriors (5-12 overall) got the lead back on a basket by Tiarra McIntyre and sank several important free throws in the final period.

McIntyre led the victors with 10 points. O'Teria Dortch and Danielle Daniel each added seven points. The Warriors will travel to North Lenoir on Thursday.

Southern Wayne (2-16) was paced by Kayla Powell's 15-point outing. Kanesha Jones added 12 points. The Saints conclude regular-season play Thursday at Charles B. Aycock.

Hawks clip Falcons

ERWIN -- Triton scored at the buzzer and escaped Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Charles B. Aycock 35-34 on Tuesday evening.

Darian McNeil paced the Hawks with 17 points.

Courtnei Gilbert finished with 14 points for the Golden Falcons and Imari Howell added eight.

Aycock (10-12 overall, 4-5 ECC) entertains Southern Wayne on Thursday.

RHS downs ND

Rosewood held off Carolina 1-A Conference foe North Duplin 35-27 on Tuesday evening.

Taylor Johnson led the Eagles with 11 points.

Tearra Ammons scored 14 points for the Rebels.

Rosewood travels to Princeton on Friday while North Duplin plays host to Spring Creek.

Chargers beaten

GREENVILLE -- Catherine Ford pumped in 19 points as Wayne Country Day suffered a 42-39 loss to Oakwood in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

Hannah Pearson had 14 points and Mack Thompson chipped in six.

The Chargers (13-11, 5-2 CPIC) conclude regular-season play Friday at Greenfield.

* Boys' basketball: Triton 41, Charles B. Aycock 32 -- Hunter Dentzer led the Golden Falcons with eight points. A.J. Mundle and Jalen Williams each pitched in five points. Aycock (6-13, 2-7 ECC) entertains Southern Wayne on Thursday.

* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 59, Eastern Wayne 37 -- Stephen Darden led the Saints with 13 points. Teammate Quintae Bradshaw contributed nine points and nine rebounds.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Mount Olive 42, Brogden 39 -- Jartarvis Bradshaw recorded 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Mount Olive clinched a share of the Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division II championship. Tyiwan Johnson contributed 12 points and eight rebounds. Xavier Pearsall had five points and five steals. Clayton Cashwell (14 rebounds), Donte Alston (three points, five rebounds) and Austin Howell (two points) also contributed to the win.
