PRINCETON -- North Duplin battled back from a 12-point, third-quarter deficit and defeated Princeton 52-50 for its first win of the season Thursday evening.

The Rebels hadn't won a Carolina 1-A Conference game since the final-regular season contest of 2008.

The Bulldogs led 37-25 in the third quarter before the Rebels fought back.

Shayne Deaver led North Duplin with 18 points and Devin Oliver provided 14. Marcus Kornegay supplied seven points.

Andre Nixon scored a game-high 17 points and pulled down 18 rebounds for Princeton. David Gurganus and Matt Williamson both 12 points. Benton Myers handed out 11 assists.

Princeton (10-9 overall, 4-3 CC) entertains Goldsboro tonight, while North Duplin (1-17, 1-6) plays host to Ayden-Grifton.

CBA earns road win

FOUR OAKS -- Charles B. Aycock turned back Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe South Johnston 66-50 on Thursday night.

It was the Golden Falcons' third victory this season over the Trojans.

Aycock's Isaac Ryals led all scorers with 20 points. Brandon Winford added 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Terrance Drakeford and Tyheim Pitt both chipped in nine points and Pitt had six assists.

Dolton Bledsoe scored 13 points for South Johnston.

The Golden Falcons (18-2 overall, 6-1 ECC) visit Eastern Wayne tonight.

Cougars stalk Eagles

Goldsboro remained unbeaten in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 56-40 victory over visiting Rosewood on Thursday night.

James Williams scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Cougars. Rasean Brewington pitched in nine points and Jarran Reed supplied eight points and seven rebounds. Mike Langston added seven points.

Jyhkia Applewhite led Rosewood with 21 points and Cody Harris scored nine.

Goldsboro (13-7 overall, 7-0 CC) visits Princeton tonight, while Rosewood (7-13, 2-5) travels to Spring Creek.

Road unkind to SCHS

AYDEN -- One night after knocking off Princeton, Spring Creek couldn't keep its winning ways going with a 57-49 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Ayden-Grifton.

John Midgette led the Gators with 15 points. Melvin DeVeaux added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists. Kenneth Freeman contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.

Spring Creek (7-10 overall, 2-5 CC) entertains Rosewood tonight.

Faith defeated

KINSTON -- Faith Christian suffered a 70-53 loss at Bethel Christian on Thursday night.

David Sladick and Wes Caudle both scored 10 points for the Conquerors. Silas Denlinger had eight points.

Faith entertains Trinity Christian on Monday night.

Girls' basketball

Cougars victorious

Goldsboro cruised past Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Rosewood 74-26 on Thursday night.

Akeyanna Whitlor led the Cougars with 19 points and five rebounds. Zearra McDuffie scored 18 points while knocking down five 3-pointers. Alexus Myles contributed eight points and nine steals. Goldsboro also received 17 points off the bench.

The Cougars (16-4 overall, 7-0 CC) visits Princeton tonight, while the Eagles (4-16, 2-5) travel to Spring Creek.

Warriors fall short

Eastern Wayne turned in perhaps its best effort of the year but came up just short in a 60-56 loss to Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference leader Triton on Thursday night.

The Warriors faltered during critical possessions late in the game. The mistakes came after Eastern Wayne used a 10-1 run to turn an eight-point deficit into a 50-49 lead midway through the final period.

Triton closed the game on an 11-6 run.

"We missed a couple of shots and we blew a couple of defensive assignments a couple of times," said Eastern Wayne head coach Tyrone Wagner. "We were trying to get the upset. We're so close. We just missed some opportunities."

Danielle Daniel led the Warriors (3-12 overall, 2-5 ECC) with 17 points. Tiarra McIntyre had 14 points and Tia Jones chipped in 10.

Shakiyla Williams paced the Hawks (11-7, 6-0) with 15 points.

Eastern Wayne plays host to Charles B. Aycock tonight.

Falcons tripped up

FOUR OAKS -- Charles B. Aycock was unable to knock off Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe South Johnston in a 49-44 loss on Thursday evening.

Courtnei Gilbert scored 11 points for the Golden Falcons. Courtney Sheeks added 10 points and Imari Howell had nine.

Aycock (10-10 overall, 4-3 ECC) is the guest of Eastern Wayne tonight.

PHS escapes

PRINCETON -- Princeton slipped past Carolina 1-A Conference opponent North Duplin 28-25 on Thursday evening.

Tearra Ammons finished with 17 points for the Rebels and Angelica Favela had eight.

The Bulldogs (4-15 overall, 1-6) entertain Goldsboro tonight, while North Duplin (1-17, 1-6) plays host to Ayden-Grifton.

Gators bagged

AYDEN -- Spring Creek couldn't get past Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton in a 48-37 loss on Friday night.

Melanique DeVeaux led the Gators with 15 points and Janna Price had 12.

Derrica Jones scored 19 points for the Chargers.

Spring Creek (6-11 overall, 4-3 CC) entertains Rosewood tonight.

Bethel downs Faith Christian

Faith Christian was handed a 45-18 loss at Bethel Christian on Thursday evening.

Madison Caudle led the Conquerors with nine points and 10 rebounds. Charity Spencer added four points.

Faith (10-7, 7-4 NCCSA) entertains Trinity Christian on Monday.

Wrestling

Eagles cruise

Rosewood warmed up for its season-ending Carolina/Four Rivers 1-A Conference wrestling tournament with a 64-15 thrashing of short-handed N.C. School of Science and Math on Thursday evening.

The Eagles (28-7 overall) emerged victorious in 11 of 14 individual matches.

Chris Lane, Nick Quillen and Josh Pipkin each defeated by their respective opponent by either pin or major decision. Angel Jaramillo, Zach Behrend, Will Sawrey, Greg Cavenaugh, Jacob Roberts, Jamie Wooten, Cameron Lane and heavyweight Jacob Guthrie each drew a forfeit.

Princeton will play host to the conference tournament Saturday. Opening-round matches begin at 9 a.m.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Faith Christian 49, Bethel Christian 32 -- Wes Caudle led the Conquerors with 13 points. Aaron Hill contributed 12 points and Brandon Jones had 10.

* Boys' basketball: South Johnston 41, Charles B. Aycock 38 -- A.J. Mundle scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Golden Falcons. Aycock (7-11 overall, 2-5 ECC) is the guest of Eastern Wayne tonight.

* Girls' basketball: Wayne Christian 39, Carolina Friends 34 -- Britney O'Hara, Jessica Swets and Katie Isenhower each scored nine points for the Eagles. Swets also pulled down seven rebounds and had six steals. Isenhower recorded six rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots. Haley Greenwood added eight points.

* Girls' basketball: Faith Christian 24, Bethel Christian 21 -- Krystal Yelverton and Katie Watson both scored six points for the Conquerors. Brittany Barfield provided five points. Faith (6-1 overall) plays host to Trinity Christian on Monday.
