SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek made a statement within Carolina 1-A Conference play on Wednesday evening.

Jon Midgette led five Gators in double figures with 24 points in a 68-65 victory over Princeton. After an 0-4 start in league play, Spring Creek is now 2-4 and in position to clinch a postseason berth.

Dontay Boseman added 14 points, while Melvin DeVeaux finished with 10 points and five assists. Adam Haggerty and Kenneth Freeman rounded out the Gators in double figures with 10 points apiece.

Andre Nixon led Princeton offensively with 19 points and six rebounds. Matt Williamson added 13 points in the defeat.

Spring Creek (7-9 overall, 2-4 CC) travels to Ayden-Grifton tonight, while Princeton (10-8, 4-2) plays host to North Duplin.

Cougars roll

Goldsboro got off to a hot start offensively and kept the pressure on in a 91-49 conquest of Carolina 1-A Conference foe North Duplin on Wednesday night.

The Cougars opened up a 47-19 lead at the half behind strong interior play.

James Williams led the Cougars with 25 points. Demetrio Irby and Robert Kornegay added 12 points apiece. Goldsboro (12-7 overall, 6-0 CC) entertains Rosewood tonight.

James Kornegay paced the Rebels with 19 points. Devin Oliver added 10 points.

North Duplin (0-17, 0-6) is the guest of Princeton tonight.

Saints prevail

ERWIN -- Southern Wayne bested Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Triton 63-44 on Wednesday evening.

Justin Artis led the Saints with 16 points. Bernard Gross and Rashaad Hill each contributed eight points in the road win.

Southern Wayne (13-7 overall, 5-1 ECC) visits North Lenoir tonight.

Girls' basketball

Eagles stumble

Rosewood struggled to generate offense in a 48-31 loss against Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Wednesday evening.

The Eagles had difficulty with the Chargers' man-to-man and zone defenses, and trailed 24-11 at the half. Ayden-Grifton (7-9 overall, 5-1 CC) outscored Rosewood 14-5 in the third quarter and built a 38-16 cushion.

Logan Bill paced the Eagles (4-15, 2-4) with 10 points and Holly Heath chipped in five.

"Our girls have to get past the jersey," said Rosewood head coach Ryan Wells. "It seems like with Ayden-Grifton and Goldsboro now that's a jersey. Ayden-Grifton is a well-coached team, they're a very talented team. Our girls' lack of effort tonight, that's what it was.

"Their girls just wanted it more than our girls tonight."

Derrica Jones finished with 14 points for the Chargers.

The Eagles travel to Goldsboro tonight.

CBA holds on

PIKEVILLE -- Despite scoring just eight points in the second half, C.B. Aycock held on for a 29-25 win over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival North Lenoir on Wednesday night.

Coming off five days with no practice due to weather-related cancellations, the Golden Falcons struggled on offense. Not having point guard Courtnei Gilbert, who sat out with a concussion, did not help the team's attack.

"We were forced to do some shuffling and play some people in different positions," said Aycock head coach Laura Romo. "I thought our girls did a good job of staying in the game, and a win is a win."

Imari Howell and Kendra Speight led the Golden Falcons with eight points apiece. Courtney Sheeks added five points. C.B. Aycock (10-9 overall, 4-2 ECC) travels to South Johnston tonight.

Marissa Lanier led the Hawks with a game-high 11 points. Deshona Cox added six points. North Lenoir (12-8, 1-5) entertains Southern Wayne tonight.

Gators down Dawgs

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek bounced back from a five-day layoff with a 40-36 victory over Princeton in Carolina 1-A Conference action on Wednesday evening.

Melanique DeVeaux paced the victors with 18 points. Jana Price added nine points and Elizabeth Edwards grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Nicole Melvin led Princeton with seven points. Tylan George and Megan Gerell each added six markers respectively.

Spring Creek (6-10 overall, 4-2 CC) travels to Ayden-Grifton tonight, while Princeton (3-15, 0-6) welcomes North Duplin.

Cougars cruise

Goldsboro jumped out to an 18-2 lead after one quarter and never looked back as it topped North Duplin 65-25 on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Wednesday night.

Alexus Myles and Akeyanna Whitlor paced the Cougars with 14 points apiece. Zearra McDuffie added 12 points in the win.

Tearra Ammons and Angelica Favela each scored nine points for the Rebels.

Goldsboro (15-4 overall, 6-0 CC) plays host to Rosewood tonight and North Duplin (1-16, 1-4) travels to Princeton.
