PIKEVILLE -- All it took was a little discussion.
After three quarters of offensive prowess by both teams, Charles B. Aycock turned up the defense and claimed a 77-65 victory over North Lenoir on Wednesday evening.
The state-ranked Golden Falcons remain tied with county rival Southern Wayne atop the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference standings.
"All I'll say is that we had a little discussion between quarters," said Golden Falcons head coach David West. "Our man-to-man wasn't working so we went to the 3-2 (zone) and we turned up the intensity a little bit, and forced the action."
C.B. Aycock grabbed an early lead on a basket by Brandon Winford at the end of the first quarter. The teams traded baskets throughout the second period as the fast pace lead to a scoring flourish.
The Golden Falcons began to break down the Hawks' zone in the third period as Dontay Gills routinely got loose for easy baskets in the lane.
"Dontay just knows how to get open and make himself available," said West. "He knows how to cut in behind the defense and our guards did a good job of finding him."
A technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct let the Hawks get right back in the thick of things in the final quarter. Trey Harris scored five consecutive points and cut the deficit to three points, but the visitors would never get any closer.
North Lenoir was paced by Da'Rico Jones' 24-point outing. Harris added 17 points, while Maurice Morgan contributed 11 points and 16 rebounds.
The Hawks entertain Southern Wayne tonight.
Isaac Ryals and Gills each scored 18 points to lead the Golden Falcons. Winford added a double-double -- 15 points and 10 boards. Tyheim Pitt finished with five points and eight assists.
C.B. Aycock travels to South Johnston tonight and makes the trip to Eastern Wayne on Friday.
"We have to step our game up to another level to go get a win at South Johnston," said West. "We have a couple of road games coming up and we need to give a good effort to get off on the right foot."
