PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock scored seven of the game's final 10 points and held off Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Eastern Wayne 45-38 on Tuesday night.

Tia Jones' free throws sliced the margin to 38-35 with a little more than two minutes remaining. Ivy Hartzell's layup gave the Golden Falcons a late 43-38 lead before Aycock put the game away by making 2 of 4 free throws.

"Eastern Wayne played us tough and the ball just bounced our way," said Golden Falcons head coach Laura Romo. "It'll be interesting the next time we see them."

Courtnei Gilbert led Aycock with 12 points, while Imari Howell added a double-double -- 10 points, 15 rebounds.

Tiarra McIntyre had 12 points for the Warriors.

Aycock (8-7 overall, 2-1 ECC) entertains Triton on Friday night, while Eastern Wayne (1-10, 0-3) plays host to county archrival Southern Wayne.

Cougars cruise

Akeyanna Whitlor led three players in double figures with 16 points as Goldsboro knocked off Rosewood 52-24 in a turnover-filled, Carolina 1-A Conference contest Tuesday evening.

The teams combined for 61 miscues.

"Not pleased at all," said fourth-year Goldsboro head coach Brandy Smith, whose team committed 28 turnovers. "That score means absolutely nothing at all. Playing like that is not helping us. We can't play like that on a consistent basis and expect to get better.

"Every game we play, we're supposed to get better as a team."

Whitlor pulled down 10 rebounds for the Cougars, who remained perfect (3-0) in league action this season. Teammates Zeara McDuffie and Alexus Myles provided 14 and 12 points.

Holly Heath and Taylor Johnson emerged the Eagles' top offensive performers with nine and seven points, respectively. Johnson blocked four shots.

Rosewood had 33 turnovers.

"We're young, inexperienced ... play a lot of freshmen and sophomores," said Rosewood coach Ryan Wells. "I thought our press could have worked better tonight if we could have just had a couple of things go our way. Once again, we're making young mistakes right now."

Goldsboro (10-4 overall) played lethargic throughout the 32-minute affair and never found its rhythm offensively. Heath and Megann Tyndall hit back-to-back baskets to create a 4-4 tie, before the Cougars used to a 10-0 run to grab a lead they'd never relinquish.

The Eagles (2-14, 0-3 CC) travel to North Duplin on Friday.

Conquerors win

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian picked up a 26-22 win at N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A foe Berean Baptist on Tuesday night.

Elizabethe Weeks led the way with 11 points. Brianna Champion provided six points and seven steals. Christina Powell pitched in five points, while Madison Caudle grabbed nine rebounds.

The Conquerors (8-6 overall, 5-2 NCCSA) entertain Falls Road on Friday night.

Gators defeated

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Melanquie DeVeaux and Norma Valentin each recorded double-doubles, but it wasn't enough as Spring Creek fell to Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton 61-56 on Tuesday night.

DeVeaux led the Gators with 20 points and 14 assists. Valentin added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Savannah Egelston contributed 11 points.

Spring Creek travels to Goldsboro on Friday.

Eagles stumble

Wayne Christian suffered a 53-42 loss to Carolina Christian 1-A Conference opponent Cape Fear Christian on Tuesday night.

Hanna Kaler scored 23 points for the Eagles to go with 10 rebounds and two steals. Kaitlyn Kosuda added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Wayne Christian (7-5, 5-2 CCC) entertains Grace Christian on Friday.

Boys' basketball

Dawgs drop Rebels

CALYPSO -- Princeton overcame a slow start, held off a second-half charge by North Duplin and prevailed 49-41 in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

North Duplin got its offense on track early with several drives for baskets by Marcus Kornegay and Devin Oliver. The Rebels opened up a 12-7 lead after one quarter and matched the visitors basket-for-basket through the third period.

"I thought my guys played very composed tonight," said Rebels head coach Ricky Edwards. "For three quarters we did all the things we needed to in order to win the game."

The fourth quarter belonged to Princeton.

Wes Wood knocked down a pair of 3-pointers as the Dawgs (8-7 overall, 2-1 CC) turned a five-point deficit into a three-point lead in the opening 90 seconds of the quarter. David Gurganus added six points in the period as the Dawgs sealed the win.

"Sometimes you have to be happy with just getting a win," said Princeton head coach Jeff Davis. "We did just enough to get out of here with a 'W'."

Wood and Matt Williamson each scored 12 points to pace the Dawgs.

James and Marcus Kornegay each recorded 12 points for the Rebels (0-14, 0-3), who play host to Lakewood tonight.

Princeton entertains Ayden-Grifton on Friday.

Faith prevails

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian opened up an 18-5 lead after the first quarter on its way to a 54-33 win at Berean Baptist on Tuesday night.

Drew Floars paced the Conquerors with 10 points. David Sladick and Wes Caudle each supplied eight points and Silas Denlinger had seven points.

Faith (9-4 overall) plays host to Falls Road on Friday.

Saints survive

FOUR OAKS -- Gary Woodard hit a pair of late free throws to give Southern Wayne the lead for good as it slipped past Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference newcomer South Johnston 46-44 on Tuesday evening.

Woodard finished with five points and five assists.

Justin Artis led the Saints with 18 points. Rashadd Hill chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds, while Khari Faison had 6 points and 11 rebounds.

Southern Wayne (10-6, 3-0 ECC) visits Goldsboro tonight.

WCS falls

Cape Fear Christian earned a 44-32 win against Carolina Christian 1-A foe Wayne Christian on Tuesday night.

Luke Howell finished with 13 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles. Tyler Mooring provided 11 points and eight rebounds.

Wayne Christian (3-10 overall, 2-6 CCC) will play host to Grace Christian on Friday.

JV sports

* Girls' basketball: Wayne Christian 28, Cape Fear Christian 25 -- Jessica Swets the led the Eagles with 11 points, six steals and five rebounds. Britney O'Hara chipped in five points, rebounds and four steals.

* Girls' basketball: Berean Baptist 17, Faith Christian 14 -- Molly Roebuck scored five points for the Conquerors and Brianna Champion had three points. Faith (4-1) plays host to Falls Road on Friday night.

* Boys' basketball: C.B. Aycock 46, Eastern Wayne 35 -- Tony Gardner paced the Golden Falcons with 12 points, while Jalen Williams recorded nine points and 10 rebounds. Aycock (6-6 overall) entertains Triton on Friday.
