The Eastern Wayne girls' basketball team finished the third quarter on an 11-0 run and never relinquished the momentum in 53-40 comeback win over county rival Goldsboro on Tuesday evening.

The victory was the Warriors' first of the season.

Eastern Wayne's momentum-changing surge tied the ballgame at 34-34 entering the final quarter. The Warriors (1-6 overall) outscored the Cougars 19-6 over the final eight minutes.

"We kind of changed some things defensively," said Eastern Wayne head coach Tyrone Wagner. "We tried something new that we had been working on in practice. It gave us a spark and we got the turnovers and it let to fast break points."

Tiarra McIntyre led all scorers with 20 points, 17 of which came after halftime.

"She did a good job," said Wagner. "That's what we've been asking her to do the whole year. She's a veteran player. We just want her to buy into the system and take charge."

Tia Jones finished with 12 points for the Warriors. Zeara McDuffie led Goldsboro (4-2) with 14 points and Akeyanna Whitlor had 10.

Eastern Wayne visits Wilson Hunt on Thursday night, while the Cougars travel to North Lenoir tonight.

C.B. Aycock rallies

PIKEVILLE -- Charlie Ipock made the final play of the night and pushed C.B. Aycock past Northern Nash, 50-48, in overtime on Tuesday evening.

"This was a great team win tonight," said C.B. Aycock head coach Laura Romo. "I thought our effort was good and down the stretch we really played hard."

After trailing by double digits in the third quarter, the Golden Falcons tied the game on a jumper by Imari Howell. Northern Nash's final possession failed and forced overtime.

The teams traded baskets until Ivy Hartzell gave the home team a 48-46 lead with less than a minute to play. Kelicion Byrd tied the game on the next possession with two free throws.

With 11 seconds to go, Courtnei Gilbert drove to the basket only to see her shot hit off the rim. Ipock grabbed the rebound and sank the game-winning shot with four seconds left.

"I told Charlie that I didn't care if she only had one rebound as long as she got that one," said Romo. "She made a nice play and hit the big shot."

Gilbert paced the Golden Falcons with 12 points. Courtney Sheeks added 11 points and four rebounds.

C.B. Aycock (3-4 overall) travels to Rosewood on Friday.

Dawgs roll

PRINCETON -- Rebecca Harlan pumped in 16 points as Princeton rolled past Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf 54-27 on Tuesday evening.

Harlan added six rebounds and six steals in the non-conference win. Teammate Tylan George contributed six points and 11 rebounds.

Rebels stopped

CALYPSO -- North Duplin struggled to find its rhythm offensively in a 50-15 home loss to Dixon on Tuesday evening.

Tearra Ammons scored eight points for the Rebels. Angelica Favela had three.

North Duplin (0-6 overall) entertains Lejeune on Friday.

Boys' basketball

PHS cruises

PRINCETON -- Princeton strolled to a 76-28 win over the Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf on Tuesday night.

Andre Nixon led the Bulldogs with 14 points and six rebounds. David Gurganus had 10 points and six assists. Austin Jacobs pitched in eight points.

Princeton (3-3 overall) visits Hobbton tonight.

Tigers prevail

ROSEBORO -- James Kenan built a 36-12 halftime lead and earned a 76-38 victory at Lakewood on Tuesday night.

James Owens scored a team-high 17 points for the Tigers to go with eight rebounds. Jeremy Smith chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds. Dontrill Hyman had 14 points and eight rebounds.

Kenan improved to 2-2 overall.

Chargers victorious

CARY -- Wayne Country Day picked up its second win in as many nights with a 56-42 victory at Cary Academy on Tuesday.

Tim Hobbs paced the Chargers with 14 points. Josh Gregory and Rashid Williams contributed 12 points apiece.

WCDS improved to 7-4 overall.

ND defeated

CALYSPO -- North Duplin couldn't overcome an 11-point halftime deficit and suffered a 56-44 loss to Dixon on Tuesday night.

Devin Oliver scored 16 points in the losing effort, while James Kornegay had 11.

The Rebels (0-6 overall) play host to Lejeune on Friday.

Eagles stumble

Rosewood was dealt a 55-42 home loss to Lejeune on Tuesday night.

Terrance Toran paced the Eagles with 10 points and Cody Harris had seven.

Rosewood (2-6 overall) entertains Lakewood tonight.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 51, Eastern Wayne 37 -- Damarion Henderson scored a team-high 23 points for the Cougars. Octavius Alston chipped in nine points and Sh'Quelle Wright had eight points.

* Boys' basketball: C.B. Aycock 40, Northern Nash 30 -- A.J. Mundle led the Golden Falcons with 10 points and seven rebounds. Marques White pitched in eight points and eight rebounds. The Golden Falcons (4-3 overall) visit Rosewood on Friday.

* Girls' basketball: C.B. Aycock 42, Northern Nash 29 -- Lizzie Fortner scored 13 points for the Golden Falcons and Sara Beth Marquis had eight. Aycock (4-0 overall) visits Rosewood on Friday.

* Girls' basketball: Eastern Wayne 63, Goldsboro 26 -- Tasia Marsh supplied 18 points and six rebounds for the Warriors. Jasmine Benjamin pithed in 16 points, six steals and four assists. Tamaya Dortch had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Greenwood 49, Norwayne 28 -- Shahim Muhammad led Greenwood with 21 points and five rebounds. Rasheed Malette added seven points, seven assists and nine steals. Michael Williams provided 14 points for Norwayne (3-3 overall). Greenwood (5-1 overall) entertains Brogden on Thursday.
