The Charles B. Aycock girls' basketball team watched county rival Goldsboro shave its 17-point lead to eight, but hung on for a 46-35 win Friday evening at Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium.
Courtney Sheeks, Courtnei Gilbert and Imari Howell scored 13 points apiece for the Golden Falcons.
Akeyanna Whitlor paced the Cougars with 14 points.
C.B. Aycock (2-4) entertains Northern Nash on Tuesday, while Goldsboro (4-1) visits county foe Eastern Wayne.
Chargers cruise
RED SPRINGS -- Catherine Ford poured in 18 points to lead Wayne Country Day past Flora McDonald Academy by a 63-32 final score on Friday night.
Kim Martell added 12 points for the Chargers as they improved to 2-3 overall. Sarah Best tallied eight points and Meredith Roethling scored seven markers.
Wayne Country Day will open Coastal Plains Independent Conference play when they host Faith of Rocky Mount on Monday.
Warriors stopped
Eastern Wayne couldn't sustain momentum from a strong opening period and Wilson Hunt rolled to a 67-44, non-conference victory Friday evening in New Hope.
Tia Jones pumped in eight first-quarter points as the host Warriors claimed a 16-13. The visiting Warriors answered with a 21-point, second-quarter outburst and grabbed an 11-point advantage at halftime.
Nisha Brown led Hunt's offense with 25 points, while Quilla Parker knocked 19 points. Jones and Tiarra McIntyre tallied 15 and 12 points, respectively, for Eastern Wayne.
The Warriors (0-6 overall) entertain Goldsboro on Tuesday.
Rebels topped
NEWTON GROVE -- North Duplin battled throughout a tough 31-29 loss to Hobbton on Friday night.
Amarose Schoonmaker paced the Wildcats with 12 points.
Tearra Ammons scored a game-high 15 points in the loss for the Rebels. Angelica Favela added eight points and April Jones scored six points.
North Duplin (0-5 overall) will host Dixon on Tuesday.
Boys' basketball
Eagles roll
SPIVEYS CORNER -- An early offensive outburst allowed Rosewood to cruise past Midway 84-53 on Friday night.
Cody Harris paced the Eagles with 18 points. Jykhia Applewhite added 16 points and Antonio Henriquez rounded out the Rosewood players in double figures with 15 points.
The Eagles improved to 2-5 overall. Rosewood will host Lejeune on Tuesday.
Saints prevail
TRENTON -- Southern Wayne put four players in double figures as they earned a season sweep of Jones Senior with a 67-57 victory.
Justin Artis led the Saints with 16 points. Bernard Gross added 13 points and nine rebounds while teammates Khari Faison and Delfawn Worrells each added 10 markers apiece.
Southern Wayne (5-3 overall) will travel to Wilmington Laney on Tuesday night.
Rebels downed
NEWTON GROVE -- A furious comeback came up short as North Duplin fell to Hobbton by a 56-50 final on Friday night.
Marcus Kornegay paced the Rebels with 14 points. James Kornegay added 11 markers and Shayne Deaver chipped-in seven.
North Duplin (0-5 overall) will host Dixon on Tuesday.
Dawgs dropped
KENLY -- North Johnston got off to a hot start and never looked back as they bested Princeton 58-48 on Friday night.
Brian Williams led the Panthers with 22 points.
David Gurganus paced the Dawgs with 15 points while teammate Andre Nixon added nine points.
Princeton (2-3 overall) will host the N.C. School for the Deaf on Tuesday night.
JV sports
* Girls' basketball: Eastern Wayne d. Wilson Hunt 33-15 -- Jasmine Benjamin led the Warriors with nine points and three steals. Sequia Hall added five points and Brooke Doherty tallied two points to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds. Eastern Wayne improved to 3-3 overall.
* Girls' basketball: Flora McDonald d. Wayne Country Day 14-7 -- Mollie McDonald led the Chargers with three points. Brooke Neal and Anna Rains each added two points respectively. Wayne Country Day fell to 0-4 overall.
