Cobb scores three TDs in Aycock's opening-round playoff victory

HILLSBOROUGH -- Marcus Cobb rushed for 181 yards and three touchdowns, and Charles B. Aycock sloshed past Orange 28-7 on Saturday evening.

The 10th-seeded Golden Falcons (10-2 overall) return to action Friday at Gray's Creek for a second-round, N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-AA (large-school) football playoff contest.

C.B. Aycock, of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference, is 3-2 in its last five outings.

"I thought the last couple of weeks, even in the loss to Triton, we are playing very good football," said Golden Falcons head coach Randy Pinkowski. "We're hitting our spots, doing our responsibilities and I feel like we are playing a complete game right now."

Cobb rambled for first-half touchdowns on runs of 49 and 4 yards as the Golden Falcons built a 20-0 lead at intermission.

Cobb bulled his way over from the 5-yard line in the second half and finished with 207 yards of total offense. Backfield mate Tyheim Pitt added 18 yards rushing and a touchdown on five carries on a rain-soaked turf. He caught three passes for 54 yards.

First-year starting quarterback Tyler Farmer completed 11 of 17 passes for 190 yards. Craig Murdock hauled in seven receptions for 139 yards.

"Playoff football is not about extraordinary plays, it's about playing every play right," said Pinkowski. "I'm happy for them right now and pleased for them. They're focused and enjoying themselves.

"As long as they continue to do what they're doing, they're going to be a tough out (in the playoffs). Marcus and Tyheim in the backfield are giving us a great one-two punch. When you gang up to stop them, then you open up things for Tyler and Murdock."

Pitt emerged Aycock's defensive leader with seven stops. Elijah Murray recorded six tackles, while Chris Dawson and Antonio Applewhite each recorded an interception.

Gray's Creek, the No. 2 seed in the 16-team eastern bracket, rolled past 15th-seeded Western Harnett 27-10 on Friday.

Aycock hadn't won a postseason game since 2004, and had missed the playoffs each of the past two years.
