BURGAW -- Rosewood sophomore Nick Britt placed sixth overall in individual competition during the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 1-A Mideast cross country regional on Saturday.

Britt covered the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes and qualified for this weekend's state championships at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons. Joining Britt will be teammate Travis Cuddington (20th), Goldsboro sophomore Bryan Johnson (13th, 17:40), and the boys' teams from North Duplin and Princeton.

In girls' action, Spring Creek's Savannah Egleston placed eighth and earned a trip to the state finals. She'll be joined by Rosewood's trio of Holly Heath (16th), Kelsey Kornegay (17th) and Jennifer Page (21st).

The Cougars' Mikayla Huf also qualified with a 19th-place time of 24:42.

Princeton's girls' team advanced to the state meet, also.

Price finishes career

PLEASANT GARDEN -- Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price finished 43rd overall and sixth among Class 1-A competitors during the season-ending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A/2-A cross country championships.

Price, in the final meet of her prep career, ran the 3.1-mile Haganstone Park course in 22 minutes, 44 seconds. Teammates Christina Foster (26:25), Kayla Kennedy (26:35), Tiffany Price (29:17) and Morgan Matthews (32:22) rounded the Eagles' scoring.

On the boys' side, sophomore Connor Jones ended up 44th with a time of 18:49. Mark Sawyer ran the trek in 19:35. Fellow Eagles Will Massey (20:38), Will Garner (22:58), David Swets (23:45), Nick Sullivan (23:59) and Matthew Laramee (26:29) also competed.

Soccer

Players honored

WILSON -- Three Wayne County players earned spots on the 2009 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A all-state boys' soccer team.

Wayne Christian's John Thomas Norris and Gregory Alexander were selected for the second straight season. The duo helped lead the Eagles to the Carolina Christian Conference tournament championship and an elite eight appearance in the 2009 playoffs.

Joining Norris and Alexander is Wayne Country Day's Cameron Ford. The senior co-captain helped the Chargers collect 14 wins and advance to the NCISAA final four for the third time since 2001.

Greenfield captured its third consecutive state championship with a 4-3, penalty-kick shootout victory over Faith Christian-Rocky Mount.

Tennis

Eagles third

WILSON -- Faith Sutton and Savannah Sutton finished runner-up in their respective singles flights, and Wayne Christian took third overall in team competition during the season-ending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A women's tennis championships.

Faith fell to Statesville Christian's Ali Burgiss 6-1, 6-0 in their final-round match at No. 2 singles. Savannah dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Statesville Christian's Madeline Essary at the No. 3 spot.

Wayne Christian's No. 3 doubles of Taylor Willman-Blake Govan lost to Greenfield in their title match.

Statesville Christian won its sixth consecutive state championship.
