CB Aycock drops Eastern Wayne

PIKEVILLE -- There was plenty of frenzy.
There was plenty of emotion.
Charles B. Aycock took advantage of a crazier-than-normal atmosphere at Hardy Talton Stadium and dropped Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Eastern Wayne 31-6 on Friday night.
The Warriors, from the opening kick, made their intentions known on defense. After Marcus Cobb had a 35-yard touchdown run called back on a penalty during the Golden Falcons' first drive, Eastern Wayne (0-9 overall, 0-3 ECC) stacked the box with eight and some times nine defenders.
"They decided that they were going to make us throw the ball so we had to take what was there," said C.B. Aycock head coach Randy Pinkowski. "I'm not the smartest guy, but I know that nine guys near the line means someone is open in the passing game."
The Golden Falcons opened the scoring six minutes into the game when Tyheim Pitt plunged into the end zone from one yard out. Cobb's 47-yard touchdown run and Tyler Farmer's 14-yard scoring strike to Austin Willoughby put Aycock comfortably ahead 21-0 in the second quarter.
In a game marred by choppy play and penalties, the Golden Falcons (8-1, 2-1) put the contest away in the third quarter. Marquis Bryant slipped into the end zone from seven yards out and made the score 28-0.
"It was not pretty at all, on either side," said Pinkowski. "It seemed like every time someone would make a play there was a flag somewhere."
The two teams combined for 205 yards worth of flags. Eastern Wayne was tagged 16 times for 160 yards.
Despite the mistakes, the Warriors got on the board late in the third quarter when Lamar Best reeled in a 31-yard pass from Jalen Barnes. Best finished with 31 yards receiving, 44 yards rushing and 66 yards passing. The diminutive sophomore also tallied an interception on defense and a pair of highlight-reel hits from his cornerback position.
"We are building and I really feel like we are getting better," said Warriors head coach Guy Williams. "Lamar played an excellent ball game and he has become a leader for this team."
Cobb led Aycock's offense with 106 yards on 16 rushes. Farmer tallied 153 yards passing, while Craig Murdock grabbed catches for 83 yards.
