La GRANGE -- Eastern Wayne scored three times in the opening 11 minutes and held off a late rally to beat North Lenoir 3-2 on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference boys' soccer scene Wednesday night.
The game was the regular-season finale for both squads.
Kyle Sasser opened the scoring for the Warriors in the sixth minute and the momentum propelled Eastern Wayne's offense into high gear. Leslie Cox scored twice in less than a minute to give the Wariors a safe advantage.
North Lenoir struck back in the 35th minute when Hugo Garcia found the net. The back-and-forth second half was puntuated by Garcia's second goal of the night in the 70th minute.
Eastern Wayne (8-9-1 overall) secured the No. 3 seed for the ECC tournament, which begins Saturday. The Warriors will play host to the Hawks at 5 p.m. on the Little Big Horn pitch.
Gators hold on
Spring Creek mustered only one goal but the Gators' defense made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference rival Rosewood on Wednesday.
Daniel Ortiz received a corner kick and buiried a shot in the 33rd minute of play to give Spring Creek the advantage. Despite several second half chances, the Eagles could not tally the tying goal.
"We really played as a team, especially on defense," said Eagles head coach Daniel Mitchell. "No one has been able to hold Spring Creek to one goal, so even though it was a loss we feel pretty good."
Rosewood (5-7-2 overall, 3-2-1 CC) visits Ayden-Grifton on Monday.
Volleyball
Chargers prevail
Wayne Country Day ended its regular-season volleyball schedule with a 25-18, 31-29, 25-15 over Word of God Academy on Wednesday afternoon.
Hannah Pearson led the Chargers with 10 kills. Kim Martell added nine kills and eight digs. Sterling Coggins dished out 25 assists.
On Tuesday, the Chargers rolled past Greenfield 28-26, 25-13, 25-14 in Coastal Plains Independent Conference play. Martell provided seven aces, six kills and two digs.
Pearson contributed 13 kills, while Caraleigh Mewborn recorded five kills and three digs. Coggins dished out 17 assists. Edie Hooks, Brooke Neal and Jessica Zhou (two kills) combined for four aces.
Wayne Country Day (11-9 overall, 4-4 CPIC) faces Faith Christian-Rocky Mount in opening-round play of the CPIC tournament on Friday.
