CB Aycock doens Southern Wayne

PIKEVILLE -- It wasn't as if Charles B. Aycock hadn't been thinking about its rematch with South Johnston, but now it can finally talk about it.

The Golden Falcons scored four second-half goals and rolled to a 6-1 win over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Southern Wayne on Wednesday night at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Aycock visits South Johnston at 7 p.m. today and looks to avenge a 5-3 overtime loss to the Trojans just 10 days ago.

Brandon Davis scored on an assist from Blake Vail 10 minutes into the second half to extend Aycock's lead to 3-1. Chase Thompson stretched the margin to 4-1 seven minutes later off an assist from Jose Rodriguez.

Jacob Palma added a pair of goals for Aycock (15-2-1 overall, 8-1 ECC) in the 65th and 73rd minutes. The Golden Falcons finished with a 20-7 cushion in shots on goal.

"I thought we really picked it up in the second half," said Aycock head coach Kevin Adkins. "Finally, we were able to score four times in the second half. It was about time. I'm hoping the continuation of scoring goes on tomorrow night. I told the guys at halftime to quit looking ahead, and let's settle down and play."

Tyler Lynch collected a rebound and scored in the 15th minute after Saints goalkeeper Alan Nunez made a point-blank save on Brandon Davis.

Southern Wayne (6-14-0, 3-7-0) tied the game at 1-1 as Benny Segura gathered up a loose ball and scored after Ranferi Hernandez's blast clanged off the cross bar.

The Golden Falcons appeared to be emotionless until Vail delivered his teammates a shot in the arm when he scored on an assist from Rodriguez in the 28th minute.

"We didn't play very well in the first half," said Adkins. "I thought it was really a terrible first half."

With a victory tonight, Aycock can earn a share of its fifth consecutive ECC regular-season championship. Slowing down South Johnston's Edgar Herrera, a 55-plus goal scorer this season, will be key for the Golden Falcons.

"I think we just have to sure up some mental mistakes," said Adkins. "The Herrera kid is probably one of the better ball players. We might put a guy on him and try to mark him out of the ballgame. I think once he's out of the ballgame they leave a lot to be desired.

"If we get on the bus and everybody sleeps on the way back I'll know everybody gave 100 percent."
