WCS Eagles dominate play

RALEIGH -- A perfect finish.
Wayne Christian swept the singles and doubles matches, and successfully defended its Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tennis tournament championship on the Lions Park courts.
The Eagles compiled 36 team points during the one-day affair. Trinity of Durham and Trinity Academy of Raleigh finished a distant second and third with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Brooke Barfield, Faith Sutton, Savannah Sutton, Samantha Reaves, Blake Govan and Taylor Willman each emerged victorious in their respective singles flight. Sutton and Reaves each claimed a 9-7 decision, while Govan didn't lose a game in her title match.
Barfield-F. Sutton, S. Sutton-Reaves and Govan-Willman collected wins on the doubles scene. Barfield-F. Sutton and S. Sutton-Reaves defeated their respective opponents by identical 8-2 scores.
Wayne Christian returns to action Oct. 30 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state tournament at the Barton College Tennis Complex in Wilson. The Eagles tied for fifth with Faith Christian-Rocky Mount in last year's event.
Statesville Christian is the five-time defending state champion.
