CALYPSO -- Spring Creek kept its hopes for a Carolina 1-A Conference volleyball tournament championship alive with a 25-14, 26-24, 25-16 victory over Ayden-Grifton at North Duplin High School on Monday.

The Gators bullied the Chargers for the second time this season travel to Rosewood today for the tournament semifinals. First serve is 7 p.m.

Kelsey Rogers led the Gators' attack with seven kills and three blocks. Randi Oxendine dished out 11 assists. Lucy Avila recorded 10 digs, while Alex Benton assed six kills and one ace.

Rebels advance

CALYPSO -- North Duplin took care of visiting Goldsboro 25-17, 25-22, 25-18 during quarterfinal-round play of the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament on Monday.

Tearra Ammons led the Rebels with seven kills and two blocks. Hannah Brock dished out 10 assists, while Angelica Favela finished with 10 service aces in the three-set sweep.

The playoff-bound Rebels meet Princeton in semifinal-round play today at Rosewood. First serve is 5 p.m.

Chargers halted

Sterling Coggins dished out 31 assists, and Wayne Country Day knocked off Waccamaw Academy 25-6, 22-25, 25-20, 25-11 on Monday afternoon.

Hannah Pearson and Caraleigh Mewborn had 16 and 15 kills, respectively, for the Chargers. Edie Hooks and Kim Martell paced the defense with 10 and eight digs, respectively.

Jessica Zhou (six kills), Brooke Neal and Sarah Crooks also contributed to the win.

WCDS (9-9 overall) travels to Greenfield today.

Cross country

Eagles run third

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Christian's Connor Jones finished first overall in 18 minutes and 20 seconds, and the Eagles claimed a third-place team finish at Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Monday.

The Eagles' Mark Sawyer (20:04) came home in fifth overall and Will Massey (21:19) finished 10th.

On the girls' side, Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price (22:19) finished in second overall. Teammates Kayla Kennedy (27:48) and Tiffany Price (28:00) took eighth and ninth, respectively.

Soccer

Chargers cruise

Wayne Country Day wasted little time disposing of Waccamaw Academy 9-0 on Monday afternoon.

Tyson Pearson tallied three goals and two assists as the Chargers poured on the offense early. Jay Grissette, Stoan Stewart, Tucker Pearson, Cameron Ford, Bryce Allen and Ryan Jackson each added one goal apiece for the Chargers.

WCDS keeper Cody Neal tallied two save.

The Chargers (12-6-1 overall) will now play the waiting game until Wednesday afternoon when the seedings for the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state tournament are announced.

C.B. Aycock rolls

ERWIN -- Charles B. Aycock scored three first-half goals and turned back Triton 3-1 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Monday evening.

Jose Rodriguez opened the scoring with a 40-yard shot that found the back of the net in the game's opening minutes. Tyler Lynch and Chase Thompson each added one marker before the intermission.

The Golden Falcons finished with a 22-3 advantage in shots on goal.

C.B. Aycock (14-2-1 overall, 7-1 ECC) plays host to Southern Wayne on Wednesday night.

Tennis

WCDS falls

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Country Day suffered a 5-4 loss to Faith Christian of Rocky Mount in the team's regular season-tennis finale on Monday afternoon.

Sarah Best, Mack Thompson and Molly Catherine McDonald each earned a singles point for the Chargers. The tandem of Best-Thompson prevailed in doubles play.

Wayne Country Day (4-8 overall) returns to action Oct. 30 in the season-ending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A state tournament in Wilson.

JV sports

* Volleyball: Wayne Country Day d. Oakwood 11-25, 25-22, 25-17 -- Jessica Kuhn led the Chargers with five kills. Sarah Crooks recorded eight aces and two kills while teammate Emily Warren tallied four aces and one kill. Wayne Country Day finished its season 5-6 overall and 4-2 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play.

Middle schools

* Volleyball: Rosewood d. Eastern Wayne 16-25, 17-25, 25-11, 25-16, 15-13 -- Rosewood improved to 11-1 overall on the season. The Eagles travel to Mount Olive on Thursday.

* Volleyball: Spring Creek d. Mount Olive 25-23, 25-19, 11-25, 25-22 -- Olivia Martinez and Diana Correno each tallied five aces for the Gators. Sarah Ford tallied one kill and three aces. Spring Creek improved to 6-4 overall.
