Greg Alexander collected the game's lone goal, and Wayne Christian upended Cape Fear Christian 1-0 to claim the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference boys' soccer tournament championship Friday afternoon.
The top-seeded Eagles (16-5-1 overall) secured the automatic bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs. The 16-team bracket will be released Wednesday.
First-round games are scheduled to begin either Friday or Saturday at the higher-seeded team.
The teams battled to a scoreless draw at halftime.
Physical play continued throughout the second half and Alexander finally found the mark in the 72nd minute. Chase Darden picked up a loose ball and passed to Alexander, who punched in the game winner.
Eagles keeper Chase King recorded 11 saves and earned the shutout.
Alexander earned CCC player-of-the-year and tournament MVP accolades. Teammates Darden, Jordan Crouthamel and John Thomas Norris also received all-conference honors.
Norris, King, Davis Taylor and Baron Wise were named all-tournament.
It was Wayne Christian's second victory in 24 hours and third overall in a four-day stretch.
