Hundreds of spectators turned out for the first three games played at the Mount Olive Hurricanes new field behind the old Carver school building, most recently Southern Academy. The games were the first ever played on the Hurricanes own field. Preparing the field has been summer-long labor of love for Hurricanes coach Alex Ferrell. The project was kicked off by a $5,000 donation by former Hurricane and current Pittsburgh Steelers long snapper Greg Warren. That contribution was quickly followed by a $5,000 matching grant from the NFL, $2,000 from the Wayne Shrine Club, $10,000 each from Mt. Olive Pickle Co. and Southern Bank Foundation and numerous in-kind donations. On Saturday Moses King, owner of the Piggly Wiggly stores in Mount Olive and Faison, announced he would help Ferrell pay for the first set of lights on the field. Others looking to contribute can call Ferrell at his business, E.T. Ferrell & Son. On Saturday. For more coverage see the Mount Olive Messenger on Wednesday.
