MOUNT OLIVE -- Kerry Maloney finished second out of 51 runners and was among three Mount Olive runners to finish in the top 10 as the Trojans placed second out of seven teams at the first-ever Mount Olive College Men's Cross Country Invitational Friday. Kevin Ryan finished sixth and Paul Hoffman was ninth.
UNC Pembroke "Gold" won the team title with 39 points, finishing six points ahead of Mount Olive's total of 45. Four UNCP "Gold" runners finished in the top 10. Doug Holt of St. Andrews captured the individual title with a time of 27:01 on the 8k course, which started at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field and ran throughout the Mount Olive College campus.
Maloney ran the course in a time of 27:17, while Ryan posted a time of 28:07 and Hoffman finished with a time of 28:24. Ronnie Sturgill (29:28) finished 13th for the Trojans, 1.95 seconds ahead of teammate Chris Menjares (29:29), who placed 15th.
Melissa Moore finished seventh out of 43 runners and the Mount Olive women placed fourth out of seven teams. The Trojans finished with 84 points in the team standings, only three points out of third place.
UNC Pembroke placed five runners in the top 10 and won the team title with 28 points. Emily Boggs of Belmont Abbey captured the individual title with a time of 20:06 on the 5k course. which started at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field and ran throughout the Mount Olive College campus.
Moore finished with a time of 21:49. Rocio Alvarado (23:40) finished 14th for the Trojans, Nikolette Lucas (23:54) finished 16th, Caitlyn Pye (25:10 was 23rd and Angela Bailey (25:56) placed 25th.
UNC Pembroke took the second and third place spots, while St. Andrews runners captured fourth and fifth. Annette Sem (20:52) finished second, followed by Catherine Shoemaker (21:12) in third, Anna Egeln (21:22) in fourth and Alex King (21:34) in fifth.
