Trojan runners have good weekend

CHARLOTTE -- Running against a predominately Division I field, Mount Olive's Kerry Maloney and Melissa Moore each recorded strong finishes during the UNC Charlotte Cross Country Invitational.

Maloney ran the 8K course in 26 minutes, 49 seconds and placed 10th among 75 non-Division I runners and 59th overall. Teammates Kevin Ryan (27:29), Paul Hoffman (27:57), Ronnie Sturgill (28:20) and Rashaad Nelson (29:56) each posted their season-best time.

Mount Olive ended up 15th in the team competition.

Meanwhile, Moore covered the 5K course in 21:44 and placed 26th among 56 non-Division I competitors. She was 163rd overall out of 209 runners in the 22-team event.

Former North Duplin standout Rocio Alvarado (22:38) was 33rd among non-Division I runners. Nikolette Lucas (22:51), Caitlin Pye (23:50) and Angela Bailey (25:11) rounded out the Trojans' team score.

Mount Olive runs again Friday in the inaugural Mount Olive Cross Country Invitational. The start-finish line will be located near the Nancy Chapman Cassell Field (softball) on campus.

The starting gun sounds at 5 p.m.

Women's soccer

GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Limestone converted a penalty kick in the 75th minute and edged Mount Olive 3-2 in a Conference Carolina women's soccer match Saturday afternoon.

Lindsey Stanley tallied a goal and assist for the Trojans.

Rebeccah Hecke supplied two assists and Tia Rose also scored for Mount Olive, which fell to 4-6-2 overall and 2-2-1 against conference opposition this season.

Stanley's goal off Hecke's assist tied the match at 2-2 before the Saints collected the game-winning PK after a foul inside the box.

Trojans keeper Lyndsey McIntyre recorded four saves.

Mount Olive returns home Tuesday for a conference match against in-state rival St. Andrews. Kickoff is 4 p.m. at Amon Field.

Men's soccer

GAFFNEY, S.C. -- Limestone notched two goals within a seven-minute stretch in the second half and rolled past Mount Olive College 3-0 on the Conference Carolinas men's soccer scene Saturday.

Trojans goalkeeper Zac Scott logged a collegiate-high 10 saves in the loss.

Mount Olive (4-6-0 overall, 1-3-0 CC) endured its fourth consecutive defeat of the season. The Trojans play host to St. Andrews on Tuesday. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.
