MOUNT OLIVE -- Jasmine Reeves and Tara Simmons battled to the wire and shared medalist honors during the fourth Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference women's golf match contested Tuesday afternoon.
Reeves and Simmons carded identical 9-hole rounds of 39 on the Southern Wayne Country Club links. Simmons, who trailed by three strokes, pared the final hole and Reeves recorded a bogey.
"That (comeback) says a lot for her," said Aycock coach Roger Rhodes of Simmons. "She's had some aches and pains the last couple of days, and that's not making any excuses. She gutted it out."
Aycock won the team portion with a three-player total of 152. Lauren Larison fired a 55, while Jessie Stewart contributed a 58.
Eastern Wayne, the two-time defending ECC champion, finished with a 164 in team competition.
Darian Edwards paced Southern Wayne with a 49. The Saints' three-player total was 171.
Soccer
Chargers win thriller
Wayne Country Day scored twice in the second overtime period to rally for a 4-3 win over visiting Faith of Rocky Mount on Tuesday evening.
Seth Mueller scored five minutes into the first extra session to give Faith a 3-2 lead.
The Chargers evened the score at 3-3 in the second overtime when Tyson Pearson headed in Hil Tanner's cross in the 93rd minute. Bryce Creger put the finishing touches on Wayne Country Day's comeback with a breakaway goal in the 96th minute.
Faith led 2-1 before Pearson found the back of the net off an assist from Cameron Ford two minutes into the second half. Ford nearly won the game on a penalty kick in stoppage time, but the shot was blocked.
Tucker Pearson gave the Chargers the lead four minutes into the Coastal Plains Independent match, but Faith scored in the 15th and 18th minutes.
Cody Neal had 10 saves in goal for Wayne Country Day.
The Chargers (11-3-1, 1-1-1 CPIC) visit Ridgecroft on Friday.
Cougars defeated
Goldsboro opened its Carolina 1-A Conference season with a 4-2 loss against Ayden-Grifton at Cougar Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Spencer Howell scored a breakaway goal, while teammate Bryan Johnson converted a penalty kick. The two goals ended Goldsboro's string of four consecutive scoreless outings.
"I was very pleased with the way the boys played," said Cougars coach Tyler Gatlin. "This was a great game for us to grow on. I am looking forward to the rest of the conference season."
Goldsboro (0-10-0 overall, 0-1-0 CC) entertains county rival Rosewood today. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
Volleyball
Hawks sweep Warriors
North Lenoir breezed past Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Eastern Wayne 25-14, 25-6 and 25-20 on Tuesday evening.
The Warriors scored six points with Emily Sparks on serve and five points with Brittney McKinney (two kills) at the line. Morgan Smith provided two kills.
Eastern Wayne (4-13 overall, 0-5 ECC) travels to South Johnston on Thursday and North Lenoir visits C.B. Aycock.
Rebels hunt Gators
SEVEN SPRINGS -- North Duplin pulled out the final two sets of a 25-21, 14-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-8 win at Spring Creek on Tuesday.
Hanna Brock handed out 17 assists for the Rebels to go with three digs and three service aces. Angelica Favela provided seven digs, five aces and a kill. Junior varsity addition Jessica Jones added eight kills, five digs two blocks and an ace.
Scarlett Martin had five digs, four kills, one block and one ace.
Kelsey Rogers supplied 11 kills for the Gators and Bianca Morado chipped in five kills. Brittany Collier had 12 assists and three aces, while Stacie Salter added four aces.
North Duplin (6-5 overall, 3-2 Carolina) visits Goldsboro on Thursday while Spring Creek (2-8, 2-3) plays host to Princeton.
AG downs GHS
AYDEN -- Goldsboro was handed a 25-10, 25-21, 25-17 loss at Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.
Natalya Dungee led the Cougars with nine aces and six kills.
Yusela Lares added five aces.
Goldsboro (1-13 overall, 0-5 Carolina) entertains North Duplin on Thursday.
WCDS splits two
RALEIGH -- Wayne Country Day was dealt a 25-14, 25-17, 25-17 loss at Oakwood on Tuesday.
Kim Martell provided four kills, two blocks and an ace for the Chargers. Caraleigh Mewborn had three kills and Hannah Pearson added two kills.
Wayne Country Day defeated visiting Word of God 25-12, 11-25, 10-25, 27-25, 15-13 on Monday.
Martell recorded nine aces, nine kills and four digs. Pearson chipped in seven kills. Mewborn had four kills, three digs and three aces.
The Chargers (6-6 overall) play host to Greenfield on Thursday.
Cross country
EW men prevail
Eastern Wayne claimed the boys' portion of an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tri-meet with North Lenoir and Triton on Tuesday afternoon in New Hope.
The Warriors placed seven male runners in the top 10 and compiled a team score of 20 points. North Lenoir scored 43 points, while Triton didn't have enough runners to field a team.
North Lenoir's Zack Baird was the top male runner with a time of 18 minutes, 29 seconds. Eastern Wayne's Russell Turner crossed the line in second place in 18:45. The Warriors' Caleb Cooper was fifth with a time of 19:34 and Eric Lemmon (21:12) came home sixth.
Eastern Wayne's Denzel Benjamin (21:23), Steven Brantley (21:24), Cole Newsome (22:05) and Chaz Fitzpatrick (22:15) rounded out the top 10.
North Lenoir's Charles Huntley (22:27) was 11th.
Triton took six of the 10 spots on the girls' side including the top four, and earned a team score of 16 . The Warriors finished second with 44 points. North Lenoir ended the day with a 78.
Eastern Wayne's Morgan Jeffrey finished fifth in 24:53 and teammate Heather Black was seventh with a time of 26:10. North Lenoir's Madison Hines recorded an eighth-place finish after crossing the line in 26:18.
The Warriors' Madeline Edwards (26:18) and Kristen Larson (26:43) completed the top 10.
Jones finishes 2nd
HENDERSON -- Wayne Christian's Connor Jones finished second in the boys' half of a tri-meet at Kerr-Vance Academy on Tuesday.
Jones crossed the line in 20 minutes and 30 seconds, and was just a second behind the first-place male runner. Teammate Mark Sawyer was eighth with a time of 22:50 and Will Massey (24:49) was 14th.
Jennifer Price was Wayne Christian's top female runner with a time of 27:46, which was good enough for fourth place. Kayla Kennedy (31:51) and Christina Foster (33:00) were 10th and 12th, respectively.
Wayne Christian travels to Grace Christian on Raleigh next Tuesday.
Tennis
WCDS victorious
PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock dominated Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe South Johnston 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
Ashley Howell, Abbey Strickland, Harlie Howard, Nicole Kessler and Amanda Farmer were each singles winners for the Golden Falcons.
The doubles teams of Howell-Strickland, Cameron Howell-Katie Gurley and Farmer-Kessler were also victorious for Aycock.
The Golden Falcons (10-6 overall, 6-1 ECC) travel to Eastern Wayne on Thursday.
Rams still rolling
PINETOPS -- Greene Central continued to roll right along with a 9-0 win at SouthWest Edgecombe on Tuesday.
With the victory, the Rams clinched at least a share of the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference title. Greene Central has won 16 consecutive conference championships dating back to 1994.
Lauren Carraway, Elizabeth McLawhorn, Samantha Taylor, Jessica Gray, Abby Sugg and Abbey Dail all recorded singles wins.
The teams of Carraway-McLawhorn, Dail-Gray and Brittany Colie-Hayes Lovett were also victorious.
The Rams (14-5 overall, 10-0 EPC) entertain Rocky Mount today.
SC tops GHS
Spring Creek defeated Carolina 1-A Conference foe Goldsboro 7-2 on Tuesday.
Heather Frey, Jordan Cook, Jessica Lupton and Quatisha Lanier were each singles winners for the Gators.
The doubles teams of Frey-Brittany Carmack, Colleen Finlay-Lanier and Lupton-Brenda Carrillo also prevailed.
Danielle McBarron and Aaliyah Gardner earned singles wins for the Cougars.
Spring Creek plays host to North Duplin on Thursday.
WCDS victorious
Wayne Country Day picked up a 5-4 win over the visiting Eastern Wayne JV on Tuesday.
Sarah Best, Mack Thompson, Katherine Roethling and Mollie Catherine McDonald each contributed singles wins for the Chargers. The doubles team of Thompson-Best was also victorious.
Tikeyah Shaw and Sydney Villarreal were singles winners for the Warriors. The tandems of Shaw-Villarreal and Brittany Scurlock-Chantrell Reynolds prevailed in doubles for Eastern Wayne.
Wayne Country Day (4-6 overall) faces Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Thursday at Wayne Community College.

Eastern Wayne 25-19, 25-15 -- Erin Falcone recorded eight service points for the Warriors and Stephanie Smith and Allyson Newsome each had six service points and two kills.
