Harris heads to Guilford

GREENSBORO -- Running back James Harris, who graduated from Rosewood High School, will suit up for Guilford College this fall.

Harris received All-Carolina 1-A Conference honorable mention status in football. He also garnered all-conference recognition during football season, and qualified for the state championship meet in track.

Brevard College, N.C. Wesleyan and Virginia Union courted Harris before he opted to play for the Division III Quakers.

Guilford finished 4-6 last season, including a 1-5 worksheet against Old Dominion Athletic Conference foes. Nine seniors graduated off last year's team, but 37 letterwinners return.

The Quakers kick off their 2009 campaign Sept. 5 against in-town rival Greensboro College in the 13th annual Gate City Soup Bowl.

Golf

Goldsboro Municipal GC

Thirty-plus years later, local attorney John Dees and his playing partners left the golf course with a memorable story to tell.

Dees recorded his second-ever, hole-in-one during a round July 5 at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course. He aced the par-3, 200-yard seventh hole with a 3-wood.

Witnessing the feat were Steve Adams, Glen Campbell, John Breashears and Tim Rose.

Lane Tree LGA

Theresa Merritt claimed game-of-the-week and low net honors during weekly action on the Lane Tree Golf Course links.

Nan Jarrell and Sherry Minner shared low putts.
