WILMINGTON -- Scott Johnson smacked a walk-off, grand slam home run as Wilmington Post 11 pounded Wayne County 12-1 on Saturday afternoon Buck Hardee Field.
Post 10 clubbed four home runs in the non-division affair and swept the weekend series against Post 11. Wilmington claimed a 9-3 victory Friday evening at Scarborough Field on the Mount Olive College campus.
Johnson's bases-clearing shot capped a nine-run offensive outburst which lasted for two innings on Saturday. Post 10 induced the mercy rule with one on the board in the seventh inning.
Wilmington collected two unearned runs during its first at-bat and Kevin Freeman (four RBI) swatted a second-inning home run. Freeman finished with four of the team's 11 hits which occurred off four Wayne County hurlers.
Post 11 hurler Michael Douglas tossed three innings of scoreless relief for starter Eric DuBose. But Wayne County couldn't provide any offensive support and nearly fell victim to a no-hitter until Scott Holloman singled off the right-field fence.
Holloman eventually scored on an error.
Wayne County (3-3 overall) takes an extended break for exams and graduation this week. Post 11 returns to action June 15 at home against Pitt County 39. Game time is 7 p.m.
