APEX -- Cody Richards swatted two extra-base hits, including a home run, as Wayne County Post 11 dumped Apex 8-3 in an American Senior Legion non-division baseball contest Wednesday evening.

Post 11 manufactured just seven hits, but bunched them together.

Matt Neal started the Wayne County first with an infield hit and catcher Nick McGee drew a two-out walk. Richards, who pounded out three hits 24 hours earlier against Kinston, slapped a 3-1 pitch over the 365-foot mark in center field.

Leading 3-0, Post 11 added three third-inning runs.

Neal stroked a lead-off single up the middle, Scott Holloman was hit by a pitch and McGee delivered a run-scoring single. Two strikeouts and a passed ball later, freshman Keenan Winn smacked a two-RBI single to center field for the 6-0 advantage.

Richards ripped an RBI triple in the fifth inning to score McGee, who connected on a one-out single. Zack Grantham plated Richards with an RBI groundout.

McGee finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, three runs scored and one walk on the night. The Charles B. Aycock standout has made a strong case for a spot on the Senior Legion roster. He's filling the vacancy by Eastern Wayne's Cambric Moye and East Carolina freshman Zach Wright.

Seventh-year head coach Brad Reaves has been impressed by McGee's effort behind the plate.

"I wasn't counting on him," said Reaves. "But if he keeps on swinging it like that you just never know. He's going to stay up here until we get somebody back, and then it's going to be a hard decision."

Junior Legion call-up Will Broadwell threw three superb innings and retired all nine batters he faced. Eric DuBose claimed the mound win, while Tyler Edwards and Neal also made appearances out of the bullpen during the seven-inning affair.

Apex scored in the fourth and sixth innings.

Wayne County (3-1 overall) entertains Wilmington Post 10 on Friday at Scarborough Field. The teams play again Saturday afternoon in the Port City.
