DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne launched its 2009 American Junior Legion Baseball campaign with a 13-6 rout of Wilson on the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex diamond Wednesday evening.
Will Broadwell surrendered just two hits in a three-inning stint. Keenan Winn tossed one inning of relief and Duane Gurganus finished off the visitors.
Zach Grantham led Southern Wayne at the plate with a three-hit effort. Gurganus, Corey Howell and Tyler Gainey tallied two RBI apiece. Kevin Wise finished 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Southern Wayne (1-0 overall) entertains Benson on Friday.
Golf
Walnut Creek LGA
Jewel Ivey and Pete Reaves shared play-of-the-day honors during weekly tournament action at Walnut Creek Country Club.
Novella Zambelli won low gross. Betty Edwards and Gaye Bryant claimed low net and low putts, respectively.
Lane Tree LGA
Linda Watson and Linda Hilburn tied for game-of-the-week honors during weekly play on the Lane Tree Golf Club links.
Watson seized low putts and low net.
Holes-in-one
Frank Jordan tallied a hole-in-one on the par three 12th hole at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course on May 12.
Jordan used a pitching wedge to accomplish the feat, which was witnessed by playing partners Doug Baker, Paul Bartlett and Coggie Williams.
Luther Carroll also aced the 12th hole during the Goldsboro Orthopedic Superball outing.
