PINE ISLAND -- Nearly one week later, Eastern Wayne finally claimed an opening-round victory in the N.C. High School Athletic Association men's dual-team tennis playoffs.

The Warriors eliminated Northeastern Coastal champion Currituck County 9-0 on Monday afternoon. Severe weather last week forced the teams to postpone their match for three consecutive days.

The coaches agreed to play 10-game pro sets since just three indoor courts were available at the Pine Island indoor facility.

Russell Turner, Aaron Dunmire, Eric Barnes, Mike Barnette, Joe DiCesare and Will Kastner each earned a singles point. Barnes, Barnette and DiCesare each claimed a shutout over their respective opponent.

Dunmire-Barnette, Turner-Barnes and DiCesare-Kastner triumphed in doubles.

Eastern Wayne (12-3 overall) travels to Mideastern champion Jacksonville today. The winner opposes either D.H. Conley or Charles B. Aycock in the eastern semifinals next Tuesday.

Softball

Rams cruise

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central needed just three innings to defeat Goldsboro 17-0 in their opening-round, Eastern Plains 2-A Conference tournament game Monday evening.

Baillie Webb fanned seven Cougars to earn the pitching victory. Webb added two hits offensively, while teammate Liz Webb contributed two singles.

The third-seeded Rams (12-9 overall) visit North Lenoir today.

In other first-round action, fourth-seeded North Pitt dumped Tarboro 13-3 in five innings. The Panthers travel to regular-season champion Farmville Central (19-5) today.

The semifinal winners meet Wednesday at the highest-remaining seed. First pitch is 7 p.m.

Goldsboro concluded the season 0-10 overall.

Track

Falcons qualify

SWANSBORO -- Charles B. Aycock senior Khendra Reid finished second in the 100-meter dash during the N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regional men's track and field championships.

Deven Sanders claimed third in the 200-meter dash.

The duo, who qualified for Friday's state meet in Greensboro, also ran legs on the 400-meter relay, which took third. Joining them are Antonio Applewhite and Dominique Young.

Aycock head coach Jay Westbrook also cited the efforts of Craig Murdock, who placed seventh in the triple jump and discus thrower Chris Gustafson, who ended up sixth.
