HIGH POINT -- Mount Olive College finished fourth overall in the annual Joby Hawn Cup, which is awarded to the top Conference Carolinas athletic program for overall excellence in league-sponsored sports.
During the spring, the Trojan women's tennis finished in a three-way tie for regular-season supremacy and earned an at-large invitation to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. Softball settled up for runner-up honors and captured third in the conference tournament.
One year after its national championship season, the MOC baseball team failed to "four-peat" as Conference Carolinas champion. The Trojans took second in regular-season play behind regional qualifer Belmont Abbey.
Mount Olive compiled a rating of .499 after compiling 98.75 of a possible 198 points in 15 sports during the 2008-09 season.
Anderson (S.C.) University, which will join the Peach Belt Conference in 2010, captured its third consecutive Hawn Cup and remains the lone South Carolina school to receive the annual award.
Limestone placed second, followed by Belmont Abbey and Pfeiffer.
The Hawn Cup is presented each year in honor of former Commissioner H.C. "Joby" Hawn for his many years of service to the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference and now Conference Carolinas.
