Wayne Country Day enjoyed its senior night with a 5-0 victory over Oakwood on Friday night.
Brooke Norris got the Chargers on the board in the 10th minute off an assist from Mack Thompson.
Rebecca Thompson stretched the lead to 2-0 off an assist from Catherine Ford. Ford pushed the cushion to 3-0.
Junior Kate Etheridge scored her first varsity goal and Ford capped Wayne Country Day's scoring.
The Chargers (14-1-0, 8-1-0 CPIC) visit No. 3 Kerr-Vance on Tuesday with the Coastal Plains Independent Conference regular season title on the line.
Eagles advance
FAYETTEVILLE -- Brittney Kornegay collected the game-winning goal in the first overtime as Wayne Christian edged Northwood Temple 2-1 in their opening-round, Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament match.
Brooke Barfield opened the Eagles' scoring with a first-half penalty kick after Kornegay drew a foul inside the 6-yard box.
Northwood scored the equalizer to force a 1-1 halftime tie.
After a scoreless second half, Eagles coach Daryl Anderson told his team "it was score and play Monday, or finish today" before the overtime session started.
Within the first minute, Kaitlyn Kosuda fired a pass to Devan Isenhower, who rifled a shot that bounced off Northwood's goalie. Kornegay collected the ball and tapped it into the goal.
Wayne Christian faces defending state 1-A champion Community Christian in semifinal-round play Monday. The tournament winner receives the automatic bid to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.
Warriors cruise
KINSTON -- Eastern Wayne completed its regular season with a 7-0 rout at Kinston on Friday night.
Brandi Dean scored three times in the first half as the Warriors led 3-0 at the break.
Janielle Daniel scored twice in the second half and Danielle Daniel and Lily Herlihy both added goals.
Eastern Wayne goal keeper Deborah Doran recorded her seventh shutout of the season.
Baseball
Hawks cruise
LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir picked up an 11-2 win over North Pitt on Friday night.
Benji Harris tossed a complete game for the Hawks allowing two earned runs while striking out nine and walking three.
DeJuan Gray, Tyler Potter and Spencer Bass (two RBI) each collected three hits.
North Lenoir (13-6, 6-2 EPC) visits Eastern Wayne on Monday.
Chargers stop Rebels
AYDEN -- North Duplin suffered a 12-2 setback in five innings at Ayden-Grifton on Friday night.
Zack McCarty, Kyle Herring (RBI) and Marcus Kornegay (RBI) each contributed a hit for the Rebels.
Shayne Deaver took the loss for North Duplin.
The Rebels (5-14, 1-7 Carolina) play host to Rosewood on Tuesday.
WCDS stumbles
Wayne Country Day struggled to make plays defensively and paid the price in an 11-7 home loss to Greenfield on Friday.
The Chargers committed six errors which led to four unearned runs.
Cole Davis and Hil Tanner (RBI) provided two hits for Wayne Country Day. Cameron Ford (two RBI) and Jack Scott (RBI) both had a hit apiece.
The Chargers left 12 runners on base including eight in the last four innings and seven of those were in scoring position.
Scott took the loss on the mound.
The Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference tournament is scheduled for Monday at Fleming Stadium in Wilson. The semifinal final games will be played at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. with the championship to be follow at 7 p.m.
Softball
Eagles pound Gators
Rosewood eased past visiting Spring Creek 10-0 in five innings on Friday night.
Elizabeth Edwards took the loss on the mound for the Gators.
The Eagles visit North Duplin on Tuesday while Spring Creek travels to North Johnston.
Tennis
WCS victorious
FAYETTEVILLE -- Wayne Christian knocked off Fayetteville Christian 6-3 on Friday.
Taylor Gray, Christopher Easom, Daniel Glover and Jason Lin were each singles winners for the Eagles.
The doubles teams of Gray-Easom and Glover-Woody Sasser were also victorious.
Wayne Christian (12-1, 2-0 CCC) concludes its regular season at Cresset Christian on Monday.
