Trevor Cox supplied the game-winning hit and Rosewood upended state-ranked North Johnston 4-3 in eighth innings on the Carolina 1-A Conference baseball scene.

The Eagles (11-6 overall) improved to 5-2 in league play this season and prevented the Panthers from clinching a share of the regular-season championship with three games remaining.

Cox's eighth-inning knock scored Scott Pate.

Matt Neal paced Rosewood's offense with four hits, including two doubles. Steven Bostic added three hits, while Will Beasley cranked out a double in four at-bats.

Neal threw six-plus innings and yielded three runs on six hits. Cody Richards earned the mound win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Eagles entertain county rival Spring Creek on Friday.

Tennis

SC duo repeats

Spring Creek's Daniel Richter-Colby Strickland captured the doubles championship during the season-ending, Carolina 1-A Conference tennis tournament Wednesday afternoon.

Richter-Strickland successfully defended their title and earned an automatic berth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regional, scheduled for May 8-9 at Herman Park.

Rosewood's Jonathan Rudolph drew the Eagles' only regional bid with a third-place finish in singles. Rudolph beat teammate Cole Radcliff 7-5, 6-2 to claim the regional spot.

Regular-season champion North Johnston won the team tournament portion with 17 points. Ayden-Grifton edged Spring Creek 11-10 for second place in the four-team field.

Softball

Falcons cruise

RED OAK -- Charles B. Aycock wasted no time dismantling Northern Nash 11-1 in a non-conference, five-inning affair Wednesday evening.

Anna Sullivan led the Golden Falcons at the plate with two doubles and four RBI. Brooke Bell, Rachel Jordan and Cara Frederick each added two hits in the win.

Cynthia Burroughs tossed four innings in the pitcher's circle to earn the win. The hard-throwing senior allowed three hits and struck out two batters.

C.B. Aycock (19-1 overall) entertains Southern Wayne today at 7 p.m.

Saints falter

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne dropped a 7-2 decision to Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Wilson Hunt on Tuesday night.

Lauren Darden collected a pair of hits for the Saints. Tara Hirsch, Morgan Davis, Kayla Gracyk (RBI) and Brittany Pate each had one hit.

Southern Wayne (10-9, 4-3 ECC) visits C.B. Aycock today.

Gators defeated

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Ayden-Grifton handed Spring Creek a 9-1 setback on Tuesday evening.

Janna Price contributed a hit for the Gators. Brenda Carrillo scored Spring Creek's lone run.

The Gators visit Rosewood on Friday.
