AHOSKIE -- Sterling Coggins connected on her first goal of the season and No. 1-ranked Wayne Country Day dismantled Ridgecroft 6-0 on Friday afternoon.

Coggins, who was one of six Chargers to score on a sun-splashed afternoon, produced a goal when a Rams defender misplayed the ball to her feet. Brooke Norris, Catherine Ford, Kim Martell, eighth-grader Sarah Best and Mack Thompson also found the back of the net.

Best, who has 12 goals this season, logged two assists. Thompson supplied one assist.

"This was a very motivational game for us," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "We needed a strong showing to re-energize and add cohesion to our team. The girls have been distracted and a bit complacent since returning from spring break.

"We played with heart and intensity, and everyone walked off (the field) with a new sense of pride for their unbeaten status."

WCDS keeper Ellen Elmore pulled off two huge saves in the opening minutes and notched her eighth shutout of the season. The Chargers (13-0-0 overall) rose to 7-0-0 against CPIC opposition this season, and entertain long-time league nemesis Greenfield on Tuesday.

Chargers falter

HENDERSON -- Cameron Ford homered, but Wayne Country Day dropped a 10-2 decision to Kerr-Vance in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play.

Ford finished the league outing with two hits and two RBI in three official plate appearances. Jack Scott added two hits. WCDS head coach Michael Taylor said one starter has been lost for the season and another is "day to day."

"We are just not seeing the ball right now and we have to get focused for this last week of the season," said Taylor.

Wayne Country Day (5-8 overall, 1-4 CPIC) entertains county archrival Wayne Christian today. First pitch is 4 p.m.
