Golden Falcons turn back young Warriors

WILSON -- Charles B. Aycock wasted no time jumping in front of Wilson Hunt on Friday night en route to a 3-1 victory on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference softball scene.

The Golden Falcons scored their three runs over the first three innings.

Torie Benton delivered a base hit with one out in the top of the first inning. Cynthia Burroughs followed with a single and Autumn Pittman drew a walk to load the bases. Anna Sullivan came through with a sacrifice fly that gave the Golden Falcons a 1-0 lead.

"Anytime you get a conference win on the road its a good feeling," C.B. Aycock head coach Brad Mathews said. "I was a little dissapointed with our approach at the plate, mainly because I thought we were not aggressive enough... We left to many people on base."

The Golden Falcons padded their lead in the third inning.

Brooke Bell singled to lead off the frame and was moved into scoring position on Benton's walk. Two batters later Pittman drove a bases-clearing triple into the left center field gap.

"Autumn had a great night offensively," Mathews said. "She squared up a couple of balls and she was aggressive in the strike zone."

Hunt made a comeback attempt in the home half of the sixth inning.

Taylor Barbee led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on Amber Parrish's walk. Tiffany Parrish laced an RBI single into the outfield and plated the Warriors' (10-6 overall, 5-2 ECC) first-and-only run.

Burroughs, the Golden Falcons' starter settled in and worked out of the jam.

"I went inside more tonight than usual, because that's what the umpire was giving me," Burroughs said. "I was confident after we got the lead and I told myself to just relax and throw strikes."

On the night, Burroughs allowed just five hits and struck out seven batters.

Charles B. Aycock improved to 17-1 (8-0 ECC) overall on the season. The Golden Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday at county rival Eastern Wayne. A win would clinch the regular season conference title for Mathews' squad.
