PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock needed just five innings to dispose of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opponent Kinston 13-3 on Tuesday.

Adron Hollowell contributed two hits and a pair of RBI, while Will Edgerton added two hits for the Golden Falcons. Tyler Ruffin went 1-for-2 with an RBI single. Connor Narron and Nicholas McGee each had hits and an RBI.

Erik DuBose earned the mound win, allowing two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks in four innings of work. Jimmy Kearney allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks in one inning of relief.

Aycock (13-5 overall, 4-3 ECC) entertains Clayton at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Saints pound Bruins

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne roughed up Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference Wilson Beddingfield 17-2 in five innings on Tuesday.

Zach Grantham paced the Saints with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate with four RBI. Jordan Hood added three hits and an RBI. Scott Holloman (four RBI), Kevin Wise, Bruce Rose (RBI) and Cody Davis provided two hits apiece.

Keenan Winn went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Will Broadwell had a hit and two RBI.

Phil Howell picked up the win on the mound, allowing two runs on three hits with five strikeouts and four walks in a complete game.

Southern Wayne (10-10 overall, 4-3 ECC) welcomes Wilmington Hoggard at 5 p.m. today.

Rams down Hawks

SNOW HILL -- Jasper Jones allowed one run over 42/3 innings as Greene Central defeated North Lenoir 5-1 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play Tuesday.

Jones allowed just one hit, struck out four and walked five. Wes Sowers tossed 21/3 innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits while striking out five to earn the save.

Alex Brann and Zack Chase each collected a hit and an RBI for the Rams.

Dejuan Gray, Benji Harris and Mike Wetherington all provided a hit for the Hawks. Wetherington took the loss on the mound.

Greene Central (11-7 overall, 4-1 EPC) visits North Pitt on Friday. North Lenoir (10-6, 3-2) travels to Farmville Central on Friday.

Cougars fall short

Goldsboro staged a four-run, fifth-inning rally but came up short in an 18-7 loss in five innings to Eastern Plains 2-A opponent North Pitt.

Jordan McIntyre and Lamar Hicks each had a hit and two RBI. Needham Core and added an RBI and A.J. Lane and Darrell Williamson each collected hits.

The Cougars host Tarboro on Friday.

ND upends SC

CALYPSO -- North Duplin erupted for four, sixth-inning runs and held off Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek 5-3 on Tuesday evening.

Clint Thigpen and James Kornegay each contributed two hits for the Rebels. Marcus Kornegay and Brian Chase both provided a hit and two RBI. Will Lanier added a hit.

Duane Gurganus led the Gators with three hits. Paul Hayes added two hits and an RBI. Ricky Brayboy also had a hit.

Chase picked up the win on the mound for North Duplin allowing two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and seven walks in six innings of work.

Gurganus took the pitching loss for Spring Creek.

The Rebels (4-11 overall, 1-4 Carolina) visit Lakewood today, while Spring Creek visits Princeton on Thursday.

WCDS de-charged

Waccamaw junior right-hander Kyle Hufham recorded 20 strikeouts in a 7-0, non-conference victory over Wayne Country Day on Tuesday afternoon.

Hufham, a North Carolina recruit, permitted one hit and faced three batters over the minimum for a seven-inning game. Freshman Hil Tanner logged the Chargers' lone hit. Teammates Jack Scott and Cody Neal reached base on a walk and third-strike wild pitch, respectively.

"Hufham was phenomenal," said WCDS coach Michael Taylor. "He took care of business. When you face somebody of that caliber at our level, you're not going to have much success.

"I have to give my props to Cameron Ford, too. He did a great job for us and that was his best game pitching all year long."

Ford allowed 10 hits and fanned three Waccamaw batters.

Wayne Country Day (5-6 overall) travels to Community Christian on Thursday.

Softball

Hawks stop Rams

LaGRANGE -- Aaryn Deal tossed a shutout and got just enough run support as North Lenoir held off Greene Central 2-0 on Tuesday evening.

Kayla Letchworth went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Hawks. Amber Best added a hit.

Deal struck out six, walked four and allowed just two hits.

North Lenoir (8-6 overall, 3-2 EPC) hosts Farmville Central on Friday.

Rebels bag Gators

CALYPSO -- Spring Creek failed to cash in on a pair of bases-loaded opportunities with one out and surrendered four unearned runs in a 7-2 loss against North Duplin.

The Gators visit Princeton on Thursday.

Hunt downs EW

Eastern Wayne fell 7-3 to Wilson Hunt on Tuesday evening in New Hope.

Morgan Smith provided two hits for Eastern Wayne. Casey Mitchell, Caitlin Turner, Carrisa Turner and Sedonia Scott each added a hit.

Lani Fricks took the loss on the mound.

The Warriors (7-9 overall, 2-5 ECC) entertain Wilson Beddingfield at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Saints held in check

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne mustered just two hits and dropped a 3-0 decision to visiting Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday night.

Jordan Coor and Chelsea Phillips collected the lone hits for the Saints.

Lauren Darden allowed just three hits and struck out 11 in a losing effort.

Southern Wayne (8-8 overall, 3-2 ECC) plays host to South Lenoir at 4:30 p.m. today.

CBA blanks KHS

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock scored three second-half goals and earned a 4-0 shutout of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Kinston on Tuesday night at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Samantha Parrish scored in the third minute and the Golden Falcons held a 1-0 lead at the half. Parrish, Jessica Price and Amanda Farmer each scored unassisted goals in the second half.

Aycock (8-5-1 overall, 4-3 ECC) visits Wilson Hunt on Thursday.

WCDS tops FRM

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Christian overcome a sluggish start and held onto a slim halftime lead to earn a 3-0 win at Faith Christian of Rocky Mount on Tuesday.

Sarah Best scored on an assist from Mack Thompson in the 24th minute to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

Best scored her 11th goal of the season in the second half off an assist from Brooke Norris. Catherine Ford's goal in the 74th minute capped the scoring.

Ellen Elmore recorded six saves and picked up her seven shutout in 12 games this season.

No. 1-ranked Wayne Country Day (12-0 overall, 6-0 CPIC) visits Ridgecroft on Friday.

Tennis

Saints edge Hunt

DUDLEY -- A pair of critical forfeits helped Southern Wayne squeak out a 5-4 win over Wilson Hunt on Tuesday afternoon.

Kobi Hood, Alan Nunez each won singles matches for the Saints while the Warriors lost a crucial point by forfeit at the No. 6 singles spot.

Hood and Brandon Outlaw earned a doubles victory for Southern Wayne and Hunt also forfeited a doubles match.

The Saints (9-5 overall, 5-4 ECC) visit C.B. Aycock on Thursday.

Rams victorious

BETHEL -- Greene Central cruised to a 9-0 victory over North Pitt on Tuesday.

Singles winners for the Rams were Eric Simmons, Colby Chase, Andrew Harrison, Jason Perry, Hunter Thigpen, Dillon Lee, Dylan Smith and Ian Whitson.

The doubles pairs of Chase-Harrison, Perry-Thigpen and Simmons-Lee were also victorious.

Greene Central (12-2 overall, 7-0 EPC) visits Farmville Central on Friday.

Eagles win

Wayne Christian defeated Trinity of Raleigh 9-0 on Tuesday.

Singles winners for the Eagles were Taylor Gray, Christopher Easom, Daniel Glover, Woody Sasser, Kenneth Giordano and Matt Thompson.

The doubles teams of Gray-Easom, Glover-Sasser and Giordano-Thompson were also victorious.

Wayne Christian (6-1 overall) entertains Flora McDonald on Thursday at Herman Park.

Chargers prevail

Wayne Country Day knocked off Greenfield 9-0 on Tuesday at Wayne Community College.

Robert Daniel, Phillip Packard, David Daniel, Cameron Homes, Thomas Smith, Bennett Howell were each winners in singles play.

The doubles teams of Daniel-Daniel, Packard-Homes and Smith-Howell were also victorious.

The Chargers (2-5 overall) faces Kerr-Vance on Thursday.

JV sports

* Softball: Cape Fear Christian 11, Wayne Christian 4 -- Courtney Barrow, Carly Hightower, Rachel McCollum, Reagan Hinton and Kayla Kennedy each provided two hits for the Eagles. Battling flu symptoms, McCollum struck out five and allowed five walks. Wayne Christian (3-1 overall) faces Lawrence Academy's varsity squad on Thursday.

Middle schools

* Softball: Grantham 6-4, Eastern Wayne 4-2 -- Taylor Parker earned the win on the mound in both games and recorded a total of 13 strikeouts. Hope Rose collected a pair of hits in game one and an RBI single in game two. Parker contributed two hits, including an inside-the-park home run in game two. Grantham (7-3 overall) visits Greenwood on Thursday.

* Baseball: Eastern Wayne 2-1, Grantham 1-4 -- Tyler Huetter, M.J. Morgan and Alex Parks each contributed a hit for the Warriors in the opener. Josh Dixon, Huetter and Hunter Smith all collected a hit for Eastern Wayne in game two. The Warriors play host to Spring Creek on Thursday.
